Super Regional Recap: Irvine Ends OSU’s Season
A fantastic season comes to an unfortunate end.
And just like that, it’s all over.
The Pokes fought hard but dropped the decisive second game 1-0 to UC Irvine. Vince Wheeland was great on the mound, spreading nine hits over 6.2 innings and throwing a career-high 110 pitches in just his third start of the season. The Cowboys just couldn’t get to Anteater pitcher Andrew Morales, who threw a complete-game five-hitter and struck out eight.
Irvine scored in the 1st – because really, what other inning was OSU going to give up a run? – on a double down the left-field line, and that’s all the offense the Anteaters would need. In the 3rd and the 5th, the Cowboys were able to get the leadoff guy on base and had the tying run 90 feet from home, but couldn’t capitalize. OSU went quietly, not getting a runner on base in the final three innings.
As disappointing as the loss was (and still is), Cowboy Baseball is back. The bar will be raised even higher next season, as will the expectations. But with a strong recruiting class, and a year of tournament experience, Omaha will be more than just a dream next year.
Talk about a throwback.
Awww Yeah! The 90s RULE.

It truly was a fantastic season.
