Mike Boynton added a veteran presence to his coaching staff on Thursday as Terrence Rencher, who was most recently on staff at Creighton, joins the Cowboy basketball program as an assistant coach.

Rencher fills the void left by recently departed Cannen Cunningham on Boynton’s staff and gives the Pokes a coach with 13 years college coaching experience with stops at San Diego, New Mexico, Texas State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State and Saint Louis on his resume.

School Years
Saint Louis (GA) 2008-09
Texas State 2009-11
Tulsa 2011-12
Sam Houston State 2012-13
Texas State 2013-15
New Mexico 2015-17
San Diego 2017-10
Creighton 2019-21
Oklahoma State 2021-present

Based off that experience, Rencher should provide an important pathway for the Pokes into the Lone Star State. But he carries big sway as a legend of the state, too: He is the all-time leading scorer in Texas basketball history.

“Coach Rencher has proven himself as an excellent teacher and developer, as well as a strong evaluator and recruiter,” Boynton said in OSU’s release. “His experience as a player will serve as a great benefit to our program. Terrence has worked at all levels of college basketball and has found success in many different roles. His ability to connect with our players will be invaluable. I’m thankful to have him and his wife Faye, as well as their children joining our team.”

Rencher spent four seasons at the University of Texas where he scored 2,306 points and averaged 18.6 points per game in those four seasons from 1991-95.

Like Boynton, Rencher is a New York City native. He was the Empire State’s Mr. Basketball in 1991 before going to Texas to play collegiately.

He was taken 32nd in the 1995 NBA Draft. He played in the NBA in 1995 and 1996 before playing in the CBA for two years. He then went overseas, playing in Israel, Italy, Croatia, Germany and Greece from 1997 to 2007.

Rencher started his coaching career at the high school level, coaching at Regents School of Austin (TX) in 2007. He was then a graduate assistant at Saint Louis before starting his career as an assistant coach.

“I’m extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to join coach Boynton’s staff here at Oklahoma State,” Rencher said. “The way coach Boynton is moving the program forward, as well as his core values, align perfectly with my perspective. OSU has a rich history of success on the basketball court and the possibilities are limitless. My family and I are looking forward to getting connected to the Stillwater community.”
