Texas Falls Nine Spots, OSU Receiving Votes in Top 25 After Homecoming Upset

OSU played spoiler to Texas’ Cinderella season.

The Texas Longhorns were off to their best start in nearly a decade when they rolled into Stillwater on Saturday. After dropping their season opener to Maryland, the ‘Horns had found a way to win six straight, included a 48-45 nail-biter over Red River rival Oklahoma.

But much to the chagrin of ESPN and other vested interests, the Longhorns claim of being “back” (I’m still not 100 percent sure where they want to get back to) took a hit in Stillwater.

For their troubles the bevo brigade slid nine spots from No. 6 all the way down to 15 in the AP poll. In the Amway Coaches poll, Texas fell from 7 to 15.

Here’s a look at the two polls just a couple days before the real rankings are released on Tuesday.

AP Ranking Team Coaches Ranking
1 Alabama (60 1st-place votes) 1
2 Clemson 2
3 Notre Dame 3
4 LSU 4
5 Michigan T-5
6 Georgia T-5
7 Oklahoma 7
8 Ohio State 8
9 Central Florida 9
10 Washington State 11
11 Kentucky 12
12 West Virginia 10
13 Florida 14
14 Penn State 13
15 Texas 15
16 Utah 16
17 Houston 17
18 Utah State 20
19 Iowa 18
20 Fresno State 23
21 Mississippi State 21
22 Syracuse 24
23 Virginia 22
24 Boston College 25
25 Texas A&M 0

The Sooners and the Mountaineers both moved up slightly in each poll giving the Big 12 three teams in the top 15. Here’s a look at the breakdown by conference for the AP poll.

SEC — 7 teams
ACC — 4 teams
Big Ten — 4 teams
Big 12 — 3 teams
Pac-12 — 2 teams
The American — 2 teams
Mountain West — 2 teams
Independent (Notre Dame) — 1 team

For their efforts in the upset, the Cowboys received 24 votes in the AP poll, still the ninth team out. OSU received 31 votes in the coaches poll, good for 10th out.

But if the Pokes can ride Saturday’s momentum into next week and beyond, there are plenty of quality opponents left on their schedule that would serve as resume boosters,  allowing them at least the opportunity to end this up-and-down year on a good note and in the polls.
