It’s crazy to think about, but Deion Sanders will be standing on the Boone Pickens Stadium sideline this weekend.
Oklahoma State hosts Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes at 6 p.m. Saturday. Ahead of his trip to Payne County, Sanders held his weekly news conference on Tuesday. Here are three things that stood out.
1. Potential Prime-Gundy Fishing Trip Coming Soon
Just about any time Sanders has been in front of a microphone talking about Oklahoma State, he’s shared his admiration for Mike Gundy.
Colorado and OSU have only played once since the Buffs rejoined the Big 12 (less said about that game the better), with this marking Sanders’ first run in with the Pokes since Mike Gundy’s dismissal midway through last season.
But Coach Prime shared a message with the ole ball coach to start his news conference.
“Replacing a darn legend, Mike Gundy, like, oh my god,” Sanders said. “If this gets back to Coach Gundy, love you, appreciate you. You — not were — you are still the man. And anytime you want to fish, let me know. I love it. He’s unbelievable, the run that he had and the man that he is.”
Please someone give them microphones and turn that fishing trip into a podcast.
2. On Morris, Mestemaker
Sanders also talked about OSU’s current team.
Morris said Tuesday that he didn’t know Sanders personally but watched him plenty whether that be on the gridiron or the baseball diamond.
Sanders spoke highly of what Morris has built in a short amount of time in Stillwater.
“Coach Morris has been doing a great job,” Sanders said. “I mean a great job, coming from my old stomping grounds in North Texas and has been phenomenal. He brought a ton of guys over with him, cleaned out the house a little bit and got what he wanted. The right guys in, doing a phenomenal job. He has a quarterback that can flat out spin it. Defense, they coming, they’re gonna get there. But I’m proud of him, really am. Because I root for all the guys in the Big 12 except when they play against us. I root for all of them.”
He was also asked about Drew Mestemaker, and the man of many talents noted the quarterback’s talents.
“The kid can spin it,” Sanders said. “He can flat out spin it. What we wanna do is get him uncomfortable, get him off his spot. He’s a phenomenal quarterback. Man, the kid could spin it. That’s why the coach was compelled to bring him over there with him. He’s a bonafide leader.
“We got to get him off his spot and make him uncomfortable because if he sits back there, even on the boots, when he gets his feet set, he’s extremely accurate. Knows his offense like the back of his hand, and he can get it done. He’s one of the best in the conference as well as in college football to me.”
3. Colorado Running Back Micah Welch Sounds Doubtful
The Buffaloes have been a bit of a by-committee approach at the running back position, but one of those main committee members was injured this past weekend. And it doesn’t sound as if he’ll play in Stillwater.
Micah Welch started CU’s first four games of the season and entered Saturday’s game against Utah as the Buffaloes’ leader in carries. But he took only one carry against the Utes and left injured.
“He’s hurting,” Sanders said. “He didn’t practice today. … I have no idea (if it’s a long-term thing). He’s hurting right now.”
Welch has 45 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns through six games. He’s been sharing the workload with JaQuail Smith, who after rushing 13 times Saturday is up to 51 carries for 259 yards on the season. He has a touchdown reception but hasn’t gotten in on the ground to this point.
