Top 10 Comments of the Week: Crootin’, Gundy, & Holder

Published

on

As I’m sure all of you know, the latest episode of the PFB Podcast set Oklahoma sports media ablaze on Monday, and because of that some of our articles turned into makeshift message boards with literally hundreds of comments. But fear not! I went through them all to bring you the Top 10 Comments of the Week. (I tweaked the format this week to go in reverse order, so it might look a little different than normal.)

No. 10 – Let the Mike Holder Conversation Begin

Lance C.: Love this pod. Mike H. rocks. So honest. He has been the best for OSU. Incredible job he has done and great thinking on life. (7 Upvotes)

Well, I discovered that many of you do not, but I agree with Lance.

No. 9 – Crootin’ Woes

Solid point to follow from Sean.

Sean Flanagan: Even if you hide the stars next to the guys name you can tell who we are in competition with. The guys we get have other offers from UTEP, Colorado, Norh Texas, Arizona, etc… The guys we lose out on have offers from Ohio State, Alabama, OU, USC, I don’t care how many stars they have, until we start stealing recruits from that second group, we won’t make make the jump to the next level. N0. 8 – All-Time Quote on Chris Carson

Chris Baker: I will reach for Chris Carson once again in my fantasy draft, and this year, it will pay off. He’s what a human would look like if a sports car and a monster truck designed people.

No. 7 – Crootin’ Budget

Zombie Willham: I wonder how much better we could recruit if we could spend the money we’re paying Travis Ford not to coach here on recruiting. (7 Upvotes)

Big, if true.

No. 6 – Realistic Crootin’ Expectations

b: Everyone knows, to a certain extent, the obstacles for recruiting to OSU/Stillwater. They are real and I’m sure difficult to overcome to some point. However, a. there are other schools that have to deal with the same situations and b. OSU does have a lot of positives going for it (i.e. facilities, coaching, etc)
I think I have realistic expectations…I don’t expect us to ever be in the top 10. I do believe we should be in or around the top 20. Gundy does’t need to become an elite recruiter. Fans are not asking for him to go out and beat Saban and Riley, however we would like to see some improvement, which there has been very little over the past decade. Improve by a few spots every other year and build off the momentum of a successful program.

No. 5 – Luke Gaza Takes Job Globe Gazette

I have no idea what this comment means, so could the 8 of you that upvoted it let me in on the joke?

Winning Comment: I never trusted that “Luke Garza” fellow. Sounded too much like “Lou Groza”, but he kept talking about things other than placekickers… I just couldn’t get into it. (8 Upvotes)

No. 4 – Good Luck Luke!

Yetipoke: Congratulations, and best of luck with the new gig, Luke! Enjoyed your writing. (8 Upvotes)

No. 3 – Venerable Quote from Demariyon Houston

Alum in AZ: Fantastic quote that deserves a repeat in the comment section: “I’m looking at a school that’s going to teach me how to be a husband, a father to my family, and I’m really just going to get my degree,” Houston told GoPokes.com recently. “I’m going to use football (to do that).” (8 Upvotes)

No. 2 – Perspective

Mark: I didn’t get the impression at all that Holder was throwing Gundy under the bus during the podcast. I think some media members are reading too much into it. Holder is thinking the same thing that 90% of the fan base is thinking regarding recruiting. Just because Gundy is an excellent coach doesn’t mean he can’t be criticized by his boss. (9 Upvotes)

It was clear to me that most of the talking heads that were debating this did not even listen to the podcast. And your last sentence is exactly right.

No. 1 – Media Creating a Narrative

Very happy to see the Top Comment went to a thoughtful, substantive comment like this instead of something silly. Speaks to our readers, I think. Congrats Bbjd.

Bbjd: I really don’t think anyone involved with this should take it too seriously.
Holder wasn’t bashing Gundy on the podcast he was being honest with how he feels and it has gotten twisted a bit as the media is prone to doing. Gundy trolling back on twitter when it gets picked up by national media makes sense because I’m sure it’s annoying for him, his staff and especially the current players but he handled it probably the best way by making a joke of it.
