Top Bedlam Plays of the Mike Gundy Era

Published

on

The forecast looks fairly clear for Saturday’s afternoon in-state tilt with Oklahoma so hopefully that leads to some highlight-worthy plays. Let’s warm up on some of the best plays against Oklahoma during Mike Gundy’s tenure.

Perrish Cox Answers with Six

The Cowboys would come up short in this one but not for a lack of trying and No. 16 did his part. This is one of the better kick returns you’ll see, Bedlam or not.

Dez makes it look too easy (2008)

Oklahoma State kept it close into the fourth against a 61-point Heisman statement from Sam Bradford. This play in particular was huge. What could have easily been a sack and field goal turned into 7 thanks to Zac Robinson’s ability to get rid of the ball and Dez’s awareness to come back for it.

A Jones-to-Jones Connection (2011)

Landry Jones is a popular whipping boy for both sides of the Bedlam rivalry. OU fans probably don’t appreciate just how great the Big 12’s all-time leading passer was and OSU fans love all the silly interceptions he loved to throw in Bedlam. Maybe he just likes the color orange. This one was an all-timer because… well you just saw it. No reason to explain further.

Brodrick Brown-Shaun Lewis Circus Pick (2010)

This is one of the most SportsCenter Top 10-worthy plays I’ve ever seen, much less by Oklahoma State, much less in a Bedlam game. You’re welcome, Shaun Lewis. The play was so great that it was nominated for an ESPY award.

Tyreek’s History-Altering Return (2014)

This might be the biggest play on this list based on its far-reaching ramifications both at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Most point to the 40-6 shellacking by Clemson in the Russell Sweatpants Bowl as the reason for Josh Heupel’s dismissal at OU. But that was set up by an ill-advised re-kick his head coach allowed to happen. If OU goes 9-3, it’s not providing a launching pad for a Clemson powerhouse at its own expense and Lincoln Riley might not be a household name.

Josh Stewart’s 75-yard TD (2012)

Oklahoma State had just let a pick-six slip through Justin Gilbert’s fingers and into Kenny Stills end-zone inhabiting hands. OU had knotted it up at 24-all. But on the first play of the second half, Clint Chelf punished a couple of unsuspecting safties over the top and Josh Stewart went 75 yards to the house. OSU would end up losing the game in OT but this was an all-timer.

Justin Gilbert takes it home (2010)

Kickoff return touchdowns are the best and Gilbert had six during his career — an Oklahoma State and a Big 12 record. But Bedlam KO return TDs are better than best.

Blatnick almost goes the distance on fumble return (2011)

This should have been a score. Did he get in? I don’t know but it sure looked like it live. Joe Randle paid it off for Blatnick but the big fella earned it. Alex Elkins made things possible with his strip-sack of Landry Jones.
