Steve Lutz is starting to put together his staff, and it appears he is taking steps to solidify his first roster at Oklahoma State.

As of writing, Lutz has eight scholarships to fill ahead of his first season as the Cowboys’ coach. Earlier this week, we touched on six portal players OSU had reportedly made contact with, but now a pair of different portal players have included OSU in their top groups. Here is a look at those guys.

Kevin Overton, Drake

Top 6: Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Houston, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Colorado State
Height: 6-5
Weight: 180
Hometown:
Oklahoma City
2023-24 Stats:
11.3 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.1 APG

An Oklahoma native, Kevin Overton shared a Norman North team with Oklahoma State signee Jeremiah Johnson before Overton went and played a postgrad year at Sunrise Christian in Wichita.

As a freshman at Drake this past season, Overton averaged 11.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists a game while shooting 35% from 3 and 80% from the foul line. He started 35 games on the Bulldogs’ NCAA Tournament team. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Overton hit the portal after Drake coach Darrian DeVries left the program this offseason for West Virginia. DeVries and the Mountaineers also made Overton’s top group, as did OU, a school Overton visited at the beginning of the month.

Brendan Wenzel, Wyoming

Top 6: Oklahoma State, TCU, Creighton, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, SMU
Height: 6-7
Weight: 208
Hometown:
San Antonio
2023-24 Stats:
11.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.5 APG

Wenzel began his college career at Utah, but after redshirting in 2019-20 and playing two games in 2020-21, he made the move to Wyoming, where he has been a Cowboy the past three seasons. He played regularly with those Cowboys, making 66 starts across the past three seasons.

He is a career 38% 3-point shooter, doing so on about four attempts a game. He has also shot 82% from the foul line throughout his career. He scored a career-high 25 points against Air Force this past season, a game in which he went 6-for-8 from 3.
