Tyron Johnson Has Mike Gundy Sipping the Orange Kool-Aid

Spring practice is rolling along and, in between snake-hunting tips, Mike Gundy was able to talk about maybe his biggest on-field addition for 2017 — former LSU wide receiver Tyron Johnson.

“Tyron’s done good,” Mike Gundy said “He has done great for us. He has bought into the OSU culture, the Cowboy culture. He’s been really good.”

Gundy knows the type of weapons he has returning at wide receiver to go along with Mason Rudolph and a budding star in Justice Hill. And Johnson just adds to that.

“It’s early,” said Gundy “and my coach told me a long time ago to be careful about drinking the Kool-Aid too early, but to this point, he’s been pretty impressive in practice with some of the plays he’s made.”

This isn’t the first sweat-inducing hype we’ve heard about Johnson from practice. Former OSU safety Jordan Sterns told us on the pod what jumped out to him about the LSU transfer (who he’s seen jump over people).

“Man the first thing is his athleticism,” said Sterns. “Just how athletic he is. I haven’t seen too many things like it since I’ve been on the team. Obviously James Washington is a freak. Jalen McCleskey is a freak, but Tyron is his own player. Like I said, he has swag to him, obviously [being] from that New Orleans area and just brings that to the offense. He’s gonna have that, bring that x-factor. Guys aren’t going to know too much about him coming into next [year], you know, other teams.”

Our man, Hayden Barber was at practice on Wednesday and gave a report on the offense. Here’s what he noted on Johnson.

Johnson has a big, tall frame. Looks like an NFL receiver already, no wonder he was a 5-star recruit. He looks like Marcell Ateman but a couple inches shorter. Also, he has more tattoos than I can begin to count.

Hayden also reported that he was getting some of the first reps on the right side in place of James Washington who is still apparently nursing that gross finger dislocation from the Alamo Bowl.

Whether or not Johnson gets the nod to start, he seems to have cemented his spot in the rotation. OSU may even be going four-wide to get him into the starting lineup.

Take a look at this list of the targets Mason Rudolph will get to choose from this fall.
