Virginia Tech Leading Receiver Cam Phillips to Miss Camping World Bowl
Virginia Tech’s all-time leading receiver Cam Phillips will miss the Camping World Bowl against Oklahoma State, the school announced on Tuesday.
Phillips underwent sports hernia surgery that will effectively end his college career.
“While we’re disappointed that Cam won’t be able to compete in the bowl game, hopefully he enjoys a speedy recovery as he prepares for the next step of his football journey,” Hokies coach Justin Fuente said. “We appreciate Cam’s many contributions and accomplishments during his career at Virginia Tech and wish him the very best.”
Phillips was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2017 who will end his senior year with 71 catches for 964 yards and seven touchdowns, dealing a huge blow to a Hokies offense that relied heavily on the talented speedster on the outside.
In addition to Phillips’ absence, Virginia Tech will also be without its leading rusher, Travon McMillian, who announced earlier this month he intends to transfer from the school.
Oklahoma State is a double-digit favorite over the Hokies in the Camping World Bowl, and with this latest bit of news, I’d say taking OSU and giving the points wouldn’t be a bad bet if Va. Tech will be without its top skill talent and intends to roll out its true freshman, and somewhat mistake-prone, quarterback.
