Viktor Hovland had a big Saturday to take the lead into the final round of the Traveler’s Championship, and he a little extra fanfare on site to celebrate.

Hovland went -6 for his third round of the weekend, complete with seven birdies to overtake Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player coming in, and take a one-shot lead into Sunday in Cromwell, Connecticut. That final birdie on 18 caused the crowd to erupt with Norwegian pride.

The Norwegian native won the Valspar Championship last year and has two top 10 finishes this year but did not make the cut at the U.S Open a week ago. He currently sits at No. 30 in the PGA world rankings.

“Obviously, a couple of weeks ago I finished third in Canada and felt like I was on the right track and just scored horribly last week and just didn’t feel super comfortable,” Hovland said according to PGA.com. “I had a couple of really bad misses but was seeing a lot of progress. So then getting into this week, I feel like I could easily turn it into a really good week.

“I don’t know. It’s a crazy game.”

There were plenty of his countryfolk in the area and they made sure they were there to celebrate. Norway fell to France a day earlier 4-1 in Group I of the 2026 World Cup, just over hundred miles east at Boston Stadium. Apparently, a number of Norwegian sports fans were keen on getting a two-for while in New England.

Norwegian fans have garnered attention for that row chant which has been prominent at this year’s World Cup, and Hovland was grateful to get some of that home country support.

“We’re Vikings,” Hovland said. “It’s kind of in our DNA. It’s kind of funny. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen it. I think that’s the first time we’ve ever done it, especially in the World Cup. It took us 1,000 years to figure it out. Yeah, I think it’s pretty cool.”

Hovland and Scheffler will tee off in the final pairing of the Traveler’s Championship final round at 1:55 p.m. Central on Sunday. You can find it on the Golf Channel.
