West Virginia Mascot Arrested for DUI, to Miss OSU Game

Famous redneck Mountaineer mascot, Troy Clemons, was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence. The Dominion Post has the details.

Mountaineer mascot Troy Clemons was arrested for DUI, according to court records.

The Monongalia County Sheriffs Department arrested him on Oct. 27. He was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court and released on a personal recognizance bond.

Clemons was stopped for speeding, according to court records, and failed field sobriety tests. He subsequently blew a .126 BAC on a breathalyzer test. According to West Virginia laws, that’s just shy of an aggravated offense, putting this charge at the misdemeanor level.

He’s already been released on bond, however he won’t be available for WVU’s home game against Oklahoma State.

“West Virginia University is aware of this morning’s arrest of Troy Clemons, currently the Mountaineer Mascot, for speeding and misdemeanor driving under the influence,” WVU said in a statement. “While the Mountaineer Mascot Advisory Council gathers and reviews all the facts, Troy will not participate in any Mascot-related duties or appearances, including the events surrounding Saturday’s football game. As the alternate Mountaineer, those duties will be handled by Trevor Kiess, a junior accounting major minoring in pre-law and legal studies from Elkins. In addition to any legal outcomes, Troy — as any other WVU student — will be subject to appropriate student conduct proceedings.”

Clemons is a graduate student majoring in business administration who was in the middle of his second year as the mascot. Trevor Kiess will take over the mascot duties in the interim, and I’d say so long as he’s been grooming his beard in preparation, he looks ready for the challenge. He’s already got the raccoon hat on fleak.
