What They’re Saying: National Podcasts Stunned by Oklahoma State’s Week 1 Performance

In the fallout of a wild Week 1 of college football, the Cowboys’ loss wasn’t national front-page news, but it certainly made the paper.

National podcasts far and wide made note of Oklahoma State’s surprising 24-10 loss to Tulsa. It wasn’t one of the major headlines, with those mostly being Michigan’s controversial win, LSU battering Clemson, Auburn’s 2-point denial of Baylor and Oregon’s closer-than-expected clash with Boise State. But, the Cowboys’ season-opening L led off just about every “in other news” segment.

Josh Pate

Josh Pate was particularly shocked by the result, as he included Oklahoma State covering the 13.5 the Cowboys were favored by in his ‘Ramen Noodle Express‘ for Week 1. That, obviously, did not hit.

“Tulsa really made me angry yesterday,” Pate said. “Well, I shouldn’t be angry at Tulsa. I should be angry at myself. I believed in Oklahoma State. They were favored by 13.5. They lost by 14, and your boy went down with the ship.

“So, it was very disappointing for me. Doubting Coach Lamb out there in Tulsa is not a fun label to wear. They’ve done them this way two years in a row now. Not good.”

Pate concluded by saying it turns out the Indiana trajectory is perhaps more difficult than the Hoosiers made it look.

Tom Fornelli brought the game up on the Cover 3 Podcast, calling back to his ‘Week 1 Anxiety Rankings,’ where he listed Oklahoma State fans at No. 4.

“But what if it comes out and you lose again to Tulsa, just like you lost to Tulsa last year — What does that do?” Fornelli said. “That’s exactly what happened. They came out, and they scored 10 points. And Drew Mestemaker did not look particularly impressive. No part of the team really looked all that impressive. And you lost to a Tulsa team that went, what 4-8 last year?”

Bud Elliott then noted that Tulsa is getting better and could be in the fight to win the American this season, but like to many, the result was rather surprising.

“I did not expect them to lose to Tulsa,” Elliott said. “They lose the left tackle (Jacob Sexton) really early in the game. He went off with an air cast on a leg, so that’s obviously a ding. But I thought their defense would be really, probably suspect. I don’t know that I love their transfer class on defense, but offensively, that was shocking that they were not better than that.”

Brandon Walker

Drew Mestemaker had a fun chat with Liam Blutman in the offseason. Blutman is a host of Barstool’s Brandon Walker College Football Show.

Walker referenced how all the people he talked to throughout the offseason were high on the Cowboys, which led to the hype and Saturday’s letdown.

“I’ve kind of just gone along with it and agreed with it because, yeah, sounds about right, sounds pretty good,” Walker said. “Absolutely garbage debut. … You wanted more than that from Eric Morris. You wanted more than that from Mestemaker, and I know their offensive line was just getting gashed all day, just wasn’t there. One of the more disappointing results in Week 1 at Oklahoma State.”

Blutman said he watched every play of the Cowboys’ loss, and as he’s about to put rather bluntly, he wasn’t impressed with OSU’s O-line.

“It can’t go understated, Mestemaker was not good,” Blutman said. “Held on to the ball too long, throws too high, wasn’t in sync with his guys — That offensive line looked like they wouldn’t be good enough to play on SUNY Cortland.”

So, it wasn’t just those in the greater Stillwater area who were shocked by the result, it went nationwide.
