Baker Mayfield: ‘Winning against Oklahoma State Is Expected’

The good guys lost in a close one that will take quite a while to get over and will be even harder to forget. What’s worse, The Villain didn’t plant his flag.

He didn’t wear a three-peat Bedlam shirt. He didn’t make any comments about his sheriff status. He simply high-fived some traveling Sooner fans and headed straight to the locker room to shave his final Bedlam fu manchu before reporting for his postgame media availability.

When asked about the lack of celebratory antics Mayfield answered in a manner that stings even worse than him soaring around Lewis Field like a kid playing airplane.

“Winning around here is expected,” said Mayfield. “Winning against Oklahoma State is expected.”

Mayfield was no choir boy. He wore the fu manchu to start with and razzed OSU fans before the game with that tired but torturous overall Bedlam record argument.

Maybe he’s earned the right to gloat, maybe it’s in bad taste. Either way it’s what makes OSU fans love to hate him and what would have made it oh so sweet to beat him. The catch-22 is that he’s a baller and, sportsmanlike or not, in the three bouts he’s been active for against the Cowboys, his team has outscored OSU by 63 points in three wins.

On Saturday inside Boone Pickens Stadium, the now Heisman frontrunner threw an Oklahoma record 598 yards, five TDs and scampered for a sixth score.

“Going into the game we felt like we had to try and control six,” Mike Gundy said after the game. “He made a lot of plays, he’s a really good player. He makes some plays and throws when he breaks contain that are pretty unusual.”

Those unusual throws included eight of 30 yards or more and TDs of 49, 84 43 and 77 yards. Those deep shots served as back-breakers for a defense that was struggling to corral the ornery gunslinger.

“I knew they were good,” said Glenn Spencer, “but I never would have expected that. I knew he was going to make some plays. We just gave him too many big plays.”

“I have a lot of respect for guys that play the game,” said Gundy. “Six does some stuff at times to frustrate people. But you have to give him credit because the guy can play. It is what it is. I have respect for guys that can play. Would I like to tee it up again against them? Sure I would. But he’s a really good player.”

Now, with OSU buckled into the backseat of the Big 12 title race, several things would have to happen for Gundy to get that wish. Winning out is a necessity and then TCU needs to lose two more games. That includes rooting for the Sooner that just dispatched your team’s playoff berth hopes with a smile next Saturday.

Mayfield got the best of OSU’s defense, he got the best of Mason Rudolph and the he got the best of Oklahoma State in his final trip to Stillwater. The Sheriff just rode out of town, thankfully for the last time.
