OSU Legend Robin Ventura Inducted Into Oklahoma Sports Hall Of Fame

Nearly 25 years to the date of the now-infamous fight on the diamond between Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura, the former Oklahoma State great saw himself get inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Ventura spoke at the induction ceremony earlier this week about the honor, his time at OSU, and that 58-game hitting streak during his Cowboy career.

“I’m humbled, honored to be here for the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame to include me in this class,” he said via Oklahoma News 4. “It’s an impressive class, I’m honored. I’m just a kid who was plucked out of a small town in California that got lucky to go to Oklahoma State.”

OK, now back to that fight that shook out post-OSU … when Ventura was 26 and Ryan was 46 (!!) in 1993.

Speaking at his induction earlier this week, Ventura re-lived how he landed at OSU and talked about the difficulty of the hit streak that crushed the previous NCAA record.

“I didn’t know about it until about (game) 33 when we were in Kansas,” said Ventura. “We had a double header, and I didn’t get a hit in the second game until the last at bat. Everybody was telling me to swing no matter what. I didn’t get it. I didn’t quite get what was going on … I didn’t really know what they were talking about. I ended up getting lucky and getting a hit, and it became increasingly harder after that … From (game) 33 to (game) 50 it was hard, it was hard to concentrate on that.”

Said Ventura during his induction speech, via the AP: “I believe God brought me to Oklahoma. I want to thank God for making me a Cowboy.”

Larry Coker, Joe Castiglione, Bill Pickett, Allan Trimble, Ken Mendenhall and Mat Hoffman were also inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame this week.
