Daily Bullets (August 26) – Why OSU Volunteered to Play on Thursday, Landry Jones vs. Mason Rudolph Battle It Out

Early Start to the Weekend

When the Pokes take the field against Missouri State on Thursday (THIS THURSDAY), it won’t be because they got hosed by the TV networks.

Because every team in the league needs to play on Thursday or Friday every few years — the TV partners have windows to fill! — Gundy wanted to try a proactive approach. Instead of being told when the Cowboys would play on Thursday nights, they would decide for themselves.

As a result, OSU will open its season not playing on a Saturday for the second consecutive season and for the third time in four years.

In 2015, OSU opened on a Thursday night at Central Michigan. Last season, it started on a Thursday against Tulsa. This season, Missouri State comes to OSU for the opener on Thursday. [NewsOK]

Competing with a weekend at Grand Lake wasn’t something Gundy and the boys were interested in, if even for the 1,500 fans who have a spot at both places.

Backing Up Ben

Landry Jones may have won the quarterback battle but it appears Mason Rudolph will win the war for the backup spot.

The verdict is in, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, who covers the Steelers. Jones will be the backup. But Rudolph, moreso than Jones, is considered the quarterback of the future.

Dulac wrote this week that “the quarterback order, barring injury, will likely not change.” That means Jones backing up Roethlisberger. But Dulac also pointed out that Jones is an unrestricted free agent next off-season and isn’t likely to re-sign with Pittsburgh. Rudolph, a third-round pick of the Steelers last April, is probably going to step in as Roethlisberger’s backup next season and possibly heir apparent. [NewsOK]

Rudolph spending the year buried on the bench is absolutely everything a rookie needs in his first season.

Here’s an interesting question – who starts a game for his team first: Spencer Sanders or Mason Rudolph?

Consulting Gig for Gundy

Mike Gundy, as of Friday, reportedly added a long-time OU/Kansas City Chief defensive coach to his analyst staff.

Mike Gundy confirmed Friday that Gary Gibbs will serve as an Oklahoma State defensive analyst this season. He’ll start full-time beginning next week.

But Gibbs isn’t the only former head coach from our state helping Gundy.

“I invited Dave Rader over here. Dave came over a couple days ago,” Gundy said of the former Tulsa head man. “I mentioned to him the same thing I mentioned to Coach Gibbs. ‘If you see anything out here that is not good, I need to know.’ [TulsaWorld]

The concept of mentoring is lost in a lot of industries/walks of life but college football coaches are willing to give a voice to those who have a keen eye for what’s going on. On that note – could you imagine Mike Yurcich for Lincoln Riley’s successor 20 years from now?
