Big 12 Update: Texas Is Not Back, OU Romps FAU, WVU Tops SEC Foe
The Big 12 went 6-3 in the opening weekend of the season. Let’s recap it with a look at how each of the programs fared.
No. 7 Oklahoma 63, Florida Atlantic 14
It looks like the Sooners will be just fine post Baker Mayfield.
Kyler Murray was an impressive 9-of-11 for 209 yards on Saturday, adding two touchdowns in a rout. He also showed glimpses of how good he can be running the ball.

The Owls, who received votes in the coaches and AP polls, didn’t score until there was 55 seconds left in the third quarter, and by that point, OU was up 56-0.
Other notable stats included Rodney Anderson rushing for 100 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries, and Marquise Brown catching six passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.
No. 16 TCU 55, Southern 7
The Horned Frogs also took care of their business. There aren’t too many gaudy stat lines associated with the game, but sophomore quarterback Shawn Robinson had five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing).
TCU has also seemed to have found a weapon for years to come in Derius Davis. Davis, a freshman, had three receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran a punt back 73 yards for another score.

No. 17 West Virginia 40, Tennessee 14
Through one game, West Virginia quarterback Will Grier and receiver David Sills lived up to their preseason first team All-American honors.
Grier was 25-of-34 with 429 yards and five touchdowns, while Sills had seven catches, 140 yards and two touchdowns. I was somewhat shocked to see it was Grier’s first 400 yard game.
The Mountaineers started slowly, up only 13-7 at halftime, but Grier threw three of his touchdown passes in the third quarter to put the Volunteers away.
Maryland 34, No. 23 Texas 29

Maybe next year Texas football will be back.
The big difference in this game between four-time national champion Texas and Maryland, who didn’t have a head coach entering the game, was turnovers. The Longhorns gave up the rock three times to Maryland’s zero.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger threw two interceptions to go with his two touchdowns and 263 passing yards, including a back-breaker on a would-be game-tying drive.
The Longhorns were also penalized 10 times for 102 yards compared to Maryland’s seven times for 44 yards.
Here’s an uplifting stat for UT fans from ESPN’s Jake Trotter:
Maryland has 5 FBS wins since Oct. 22, 2016. Two of them have come against the Longhorns.

Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 27
Ole Miss ran for 210 yards, and junior running back Scottie Phillips had 204 of them on 16 carries. That’s 12.8 yards a carry.
The Tech offense wasn’t horrific, but it also wasn’t outstanding. Quarterback Alan Bowman had 273 yards and a touchdown.
The Red Raiders had the ball for about 13 minutes longer than the Rebels, but it was all for not.
Boone had a tweet of the day candidate on this one:

Nicholls 26, Kansas 23
While the Texas loss is somewhat humorous, Kansas losing is getting kind of sad.
Under David Beaty, the Jayhawks are 3-34 and 2-2 against FCS teams.
This game was close. It went to overtime when Gabriel Rui, a native of Hinton, Oklahoma, hit a 41-yard field goal to put KU up 23-20. But, the Colonels scored a touchdown on their next possession.

The Jayhawks host Texas on Nov. 23, so there’s that.
Kansas State 27, South Dakota 24
Oklahoma State fans, if you think the Cowboys are having quarterback issues, you should talk to someone in Manhattan.
Bill Snyder started Skylar Thompson, but after five possessions and a 10-3 deficit, Snyder threw in Alex Delton. Delton made it five possessions before he threw a pick-six that put the Wildcats down 24-12. That was all in the first half.
Thompson ended as the hero, throwing a go-ahead touchdown pass, but any time you need a hero against an FCS team, that’s probably not a good sign.
Thompson ended with 61 passing yards, 58 rushing yards, a touchdown and an interception. Delton finished with 91 passing yards, 78 rushing yards, no touchdowns, an interception and an 18.3 QBR.
Baylor 55, Abilene Christian 27
Baylor has equaled its win total from last season.
The Bears also used two quarterbacks in sophomore Charlie Brewer, who started, and senior Jalan McClendon. McClendon finished with the better outing, completing 10 of his 13 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns.
Baylor also had a pair of 100-yard rushers in John Lovett (12 carries, 115 yards, three touchdowns) and JaMycal Hasty (10 carries, 102 yards, two touchdowns).
Iowa State vs. South Dakota State Canceled
The Cyclones had a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before a 2 1/2-hour lightning delay eventually ended to game.
The game goes down as a no contest, and the teams won’t likely be able to reschedule with different bye weeks.
