NFL Update: Chris Carson’s Career Game, Vincent Taylor is a Rising Star
Several former Pokes made headlines and plays during the NFL’s Week 5.
Let’s jump right into our NFL Update with a couple of former Pokes who returned to career performances. First off, Chris Carson.
Carson Returns with a Bang
One week after sitting out as a precaution following a hip injury, the former Cowboy tailback rushed for a career-high 116 yards on 19 carries.
His hip appears to be fine, by the way.

After criticism of the Seattle running game had reached its peak earlier this year, the Seahawks have seen three-straight weeks with back eclipsing triple digits on the ground. Carson has produced twoo of them, bookending Mike Davis’ 101-yard outing while he was sidelined.
“I mean, we never believed that this team couldn’t run the ball,” said Carson. “The whole time, we always thought that (if we were) given the chance, we could make something happen so we’re starting to show people that.”
Lenzy Pipkins’ Whirlwind Week
Just a day after being promoted from the practice squad by Indianapolis, the former Oklahoma State DB had to cancel a flight to Dallas to see family and quickly make his way to Foxborough for the Colts’ Thursday night game against the Patriots.
Pipkins seized the opportunity of his second career start by recording a career-high nine tackles.
Pipkins’ whirlwind week prompted a feature on the second-year cornerback by The Athletic. You should check out the full article, but here’s a pretty cool snippet.
Because practice squad players don’t typically travel with the team, Pipkins was going to take advantage of the upcoming long weekend. The Colts were going to have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, so Pipkins had a flight booked to travel back home to Dallas. See some family, hang out with a few friends. Why not?
Well …
“I had booked a flight home for Wednesday after practice,” Pipkins said. “So, I had to cancel my flight and, man, I had to get my mindset right. I went from not even being in the game plan to, well I might be in the game plan, to, hey, you’re basically starting and playing the whole game.”
Tre Flowers Continues to Shine
Flowers had six total tackles during the Seahawks 33-31 loss to the white-hot Rams, including this pass breakup-turned-interception while covering Todd Gurley.
Great pass breakup by Tre Flowers! Perfect coverage to deflect the ball for Frank Clark to intercept the pass. #Seahawks #LARvsSEApic.twitter.com/bhGR8W7wot

It’s the second game in a row that a Flowers play has led to a takeaway. He stripped Arizona running back David Johnson the week prior which led to a fumble recovery by the defense.
“It felt good,” Flowers said after the game. “Our goal is to get turnovers and it just so happens that I’m tipping them and they’re getting them.”
Flowers was also featured in a Q&A for Seahawks.com. The most surprising tidbit might be Flowers’ describing what his first job.
I used to bulletproof cars for the government and Secret Service for a company called Texas Armoring Corporation. I was in charge of the gas tanks, making sure they were lined with bulletproof materials. [Seahawks.com]
How have I never heard that?
Vincent Taylor a Rising Star
The second-year defensive tackle has done nothing but improve during his time in Miami, and he’s made a huge leap in Year 2, leading the Dolphins to feel comfortable cutting former Sooner DT Jordan Phillips.
During the Dolphins’ 27-17 loss in Cincinnati on Saturday, Taylor showed off his kick blocking acumen once again to go along with a pair of tackles.

The future looks bright for Taylor as continues to build his name for an up-and-coming defense in Miami.
Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor could be interior lynchpins for the Dolphins for the next 3 years or more. They are legit top 3 DTs at such a reasonable cost.

Vincent Taylor is amazing on special teams. He will be in the league 15 years just the strength off that. Wow

Vincent Taylor is a rising star. He’s become one of my favorite players to watch on film.

Emmanuel Ogbah Making Plays
Emmanuel Ogbah continued making plays in his second game back from an ankle injury that took him out during the Browns’ open week, including a big one in the red zone.
Rookie cornerback Denzel Ward will get plenty of pub for this red zone interception on second-and-goal, but it was Ogbah who rushed Joe Flacco and tipped the pass to allow the big play.

Ogbah finished with five total tackles, a QB hit and that pass deflection. Thanks in big part to the former Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, the Browns have doubled their cumulative win total over Ogbah’s two-year career.
Winning feels great??

Dan Bailey’s Redemption
A week after going a perfect 3-for-3 in his Vikings debut, Bailey got off to a rough start in Philadelphia on Sunday. He missed two field goals including a 28-yard attempt off of the upright.
But the NFL’s No. 2 most accurate kicker nailed a 52-yarder to put the road team up 9 over the defending Super Bowl champs with less than three minutes to go, effectively sealing the win.

“For him to make that kick is really why we brought him here,” said Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer according to The Star Tribune.
One-Liners
• James Washington came up catch-less on his two his two targets during the Steelers’ 41-17 win over the Falcons.
• Blake Jarwin grabbed his first career catch for 11 yards during the Cowboys’ 19-16 overtime loss to the Texans.
• Tyler Patmon grabbed three total tackles during the Jaguars’ 30-14 loss to the Chiefs.
• Russell Okung missed Week 5 with a groin injury and is questionable for this weekend. But he did get to celebrate his birthday with teammates following their 26-10 win over Oakland.
Best birthday gift ever?!
