Comparing Tylan Wallace’s Statistical Projections to Previous Biletnikoff Winners

Wallace may have a shot to follow in Washington’s shoes.

Last week, I wrote a post about where Tylan Wallace’s projections would put him in the Oklahoma State record books.

Against Texas, Wallace decided he would boost those projections with a monstrous 10-catch, 222-yard, two-touchdown performance. So, instead of comparing him to only OSU greats, this week we’ll look at how Wallace’s projections stack up against previous Biletnikoff winners.

At this point, I think you could bet on OSU making a bowl game, but with how wild this season has been, I’ve listed both of his projections.

Year Player School Receptions Yards Touchdowns
2018 Tylan Wallace (No Bowl) Oklahoma State 75 1,410 9
2018 Tylan Wallace (Bowl) Oklahoma State 81.25 1,527.50 9.75

Here are the past 10 Biletnikoff winners’ season stats, including their postseason games:

Year Player School Receptions Yards Touchdowns
2017 James Washington Oklahoma State 74 1,549 13
2016 Dede Westbrook Oklahoma 80 1,524 17
2015 Corey Coleman Baylor 74 1,363 20
2014 Amari Cooper Alabama 124 1,727 16
2013 Brandin Cooks Oregon State 128 1,730 16
2012 Marqise Lee USC 118 1,721 14
2011 Justin Blackmon Oklahoma State 122 1,522 18
2010 Justin Blackmon Oklahoma State 111 1,782 20
2009 Golden Tate Notre Dame 93 1,496 15
2008 Michael Crabtree Texas Tech 97 1,165 19

Wallace’s projected yards and receptions hang right around that of the previous few winners. Something that is down from all 10 of these guys is touchdowns. If Wallace won with a projected 9-10 touchdowns, it would be the lowest amount since 2005 when Oregon State’s Mike Hass won the award with only six receiving scores.

It’s also interesting to see that of the past 10 winners, six are from the Big 12, including three from OSU, and the past three are all from different Big 12 schools.

The award isn’t quite Wallace’s to lose, though. Here are the nation’s leading pass catchers.

Player School Games Played Receptions Yards Touchdowns
Andy Isabella Massachusetts 9 68 1,091 9
John Ursua Hawaii 10 76 1,083 14
Antoine Wesley Texas Tech 8 58 977 7
Preston Williams Colorado State 9 71 951 8
Tylan Wallace Oklahoma State 8 50 940 6
Scott Miller Bowling Green 8 54 860 7
Jonathan Duhart Old Dominion 9 58 847 7
Rico Bussey North Texas 9 55 822 10
Tyler Johnson Minnesota 8 52 807 8
Travis Fulgham Old Dominion 9 47 806 6

Although Wallace is fifth in the country, three of the players in front of him have played at least one more game than he has. He is also one of only three players on the list who plays in a Power Five conference.

A player from a non-Power Five school hasn’t won the Biletnikoff since Louisiana Tech’s Troy Edwards did so in 1998 with a ridiculous 140 receptions, 1,996 yards and 27 touchdowns. That’s excluding Notre Dame.

With that being said, Texas Tech’s Antoine Wesley poses as an obstacle for Wallace. Wesley is a 6-foot-5 junior. Wesley’s best game came on Sept. 15 against Houston where he had 13 receptions for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Neither Wallace nor Wesley scored in their head-to-head meeting. Wallace had seven catches for 123 yards, and Wesley had seven catches for 98 yards.
