Bryce Thompson Commits to Oklahoma State
He took the long way, but Bryce Thompson is finally a Cowboy.
He took the long way, but the top-ranked Oklahoma high school basketball standout of the last decade is headed to Stillwater.
Bryce Thompson committed to Oklahoma State on Thursday. Thompson was a five-star prospect from Booker T. Washington in Tulsa before spending his freshman season at Kansas.
OSU coach Mike Boynton was heavily involved in recruiting Thompson up until Thompson’s commitment to Kansas.
Thompson was the No. 21 player in the 2020 recruiting class, making him the top prospect from Oklahoma. He was a McDonald’s All-American and garnered offers from Kansas, North Carolina, Michigan State, Texas, Texas A&M, Iowa, Arkansas, Notre Dame and others out of high school.
OSU was in his Final Four that also included Kansas, Oklahoma and North Carolina before he pledged to the Jayhawks. He took multiple visits to Stillwater. Boynton even visited Thompson’s house at midnight when a live period opened during his senior year of high school.
Thompson’s 247Sports composite score of 0.9923 ranks seventh-best in program history, though he didn’t go straight from high school to OSU. That score trails Cade Cunningham (0.9999), Gerald Green (0.9998), Le’Bryan Nash (0.9972), Marcus Smart (0.9960), Keith Brumbaugh (0.9948) and Byron Eaton (0.9924).
Listed at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds, Thompson started four games for the Jayhawks this past season as he dealt with a couple of injuries. He averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists a game during his freshman season.
His best game of the season came against the eventual national runner-up. Against Gonzaga on Nov. 26, Thompson scored 12 points and had three rebounds. A back injury saw him miss the first half of January, and in his first game back (in Stillwater no less), Thompson injured a finger, which kept him out another month.
As things stand now, it looks as if Thompson will be one of four Oklahomans on scholarship on the OSU basketball team this upcoming season, joining Rondel Walker, Kalib Boone and Keylan Boone.
