Pro Football Focus Names Collin Oliver True Freshman of the Week
Oliver is tied for the team lead in sacks.
With Trace Ford, Brock Martin and Tyren Irby all injured at his position, true freshman Collin Oliver got his first career start Saturday, and he didn’t disappoint.
Pro Football Focus named Oliver its True Freshman of the Week for his part in Oklahoma State’s 24-14 victory against Baylor. Oliver recorded six total tackles including three tackles for loss and two sacks — not bad for someone who played Oklahoma high school football just last season.
His 86.1 PFF grade led all Cowboys this past week. That led all freshmen defenders in the country for Week 5 who played at least 35 snaps.
“He’s gonna get to the quarterback a bunch in his career,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said after Saturday’s game.
Oliver got prepped for this gig in the spring, as skipped his final semester at Edmond Santa Fe High School and enrolled early at OSU. During the spring, Ford, Martin and Irby all dealt with injuries, meaning the youngster got more run than expected with the first team.
He came to OSU as a highly touted prospect in the 2021 class. A four-star recruit, Oliver was the No. 398 player in his class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. To become a Cowboy, he turned down offers from Georgia, Oregon, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Iowa State, Colorado, TCU and others.
Oliver is now tied for the team lead in sacks with Martin at 2.5. Oliver also has 14 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss as three QB hurries on the season.
