Superlatives: Game MVPs, Top Plays and More from Oklahoma State’s Week 3 Win at Tulsa

The Cowboys got the win, and this one was never really in any doubt, with Oklahoma State handling Tulsa 45-10 on Saturday. There are still some questions to be answered before OSU kicks off Big 12 play against Utah next weekend, but for now, let’s dole out some awards. There are plenty to go around after a big win like this one.

Offensive MVP: Alan Bowman

There was really no question. Bowman had four touchdowns by half time and tied a career-high with five. He completed 77% of his passes and his 231.5 passer rating was a career high. It was a nice bounce back after an inconsistent outing against Arkansas last week.

Tulsa did its best to stack the box and take Ollie Gordon out of the picture. Whether or not you believe a Tulsa defense should be able to dictate the game in that way is a different story, but in this case, Bowman made them pay.

Honorable Mentions: De’Zhaun Stribling, Talyn Shettron

Defensive MVP: Kendal Daniels

Daniels filled up the stat sheet, but his impact went beyond the numbers. He was all over the field and almost single-handedly stopped two Tulsa drives. The Golden Hurricane turned it over on downs twice, once thanks to a Daniels pass breakup and once thanks to a Daniels sack.

Honorable Mentions: Nick Martin, Trey Rucker, Cam Smith

Stat of the Game: 2X100 Receivers

In case you needed anything to back up just how stacked OSU’s receiving corps is, De’Zhauhn Stribling and Talyn Shettron each had over 100 yards through the air on Saturday, combing for 284. It was a career game for both of them, as Stribling had 174 receiving yards and Shettron had 110.

What’s more impressive is the last duo to do that are still on the roster (Brennan Presley and Rashod Owens), and they each had multiple catches.

Breakout Performance: Trent Howland

The former Indiana transfer came in having taken just three Cowboys handoffs for seven yards, but he was a big reason the Cowboys broke triple digits in rushing yards against Tulsa. Howland came in as OSU’s third option at running back in the fourth quarter following a mostly ineffective Ollie Gordon and Sesi Vailhali. He busted off several decent runs and came up one yard shy of his career best with 53 on 10 carries. His late outburst also saved some face for the Cowboys’ running game on the box score. Before he hit the field, OSU was averaging just three yards per carry.

Play of the Game: Bowman to Shettron

There were some honorable mentions, which I went ahead and posted below, but it’s hard to beat a 78-yard touchdown, especially coming on a dime like this one.
