Look Out, Talyn Shettron’s Potential Is Starting to Show for Oklahoma State
‘I’ve been waiting for this moment, you could say, my whole career here through all the injuries and stuff.’
No. 2 in white was bolting down the east sideline of Skelly Field on Saturday — it felt like 2019.
Oklahoma State beat Tulsa 45-10 in what could have been a breakout game for redshirt sophomore receiver Talyn Shettron. Shettron scored on a 78-yard pass play in the second quarter. Five seasons earlier, Tylan (just move some letters around from Talyn) Wallace, who also wore No. 2, scored running down that same sideline on a 90-yard play. Look at this:

History repeating itself. Sort of. Close enough to be pretty cool. Good find by @HarrySneedIV #okstate #GoPokes https://t.co/TTt804S9C7 pic.twitter.com/0h42WfZX3c

Shettron finished with three catches for 110 yards and the score on Saturday. His potential as a former four-star recruit was super evident. He is 6-foot-2 but is perhaps the fastest receiver on OSU’s team.
If you need a refresher on how Shettron got to this point, he finished as the No. 126 player in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. At one point, he was listed 54th nationally in those rankings. Shettron initially committed to Oklahoma over offers from Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Texas and others. But he cemented himself as an early OSU fan favorite on June 30, 2021 when he flipped from the Sooners to the Cowboys. He became the highest-rated receiver signee the Cowboys had since Dez Bryant.
Shettron took a redshirt in 2022 while still playing in four games, where he caught three passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. He was starting to get going in 2023, catching a pass in each of OSU’s opening three games before having a three-catch, 36-yard performance in October in Morgantown, but Shettron got injured that day and missed the rest of the season.
The Cowboys’ 2024 receiver room is as talented as it has been in a long time with veterans Brennan Presley, De’Zhaun Stribling and Rashod Owens leading the way, but even with all that proven talent, Shettron is starting to carve out a role — evident by his big day Saturday.
“It felt great,” said Shettron after the Tulsa game. “I’ve been waiting for this moment, you could say, my whole career here through all the injuries and stuff. It just felt great to get back out there and feel like myself again.”
Again, the speed Shettron showed for someone as big as he is stood out. He ran away from the TU corner, picking his knees up and striding into the distance.
“It was a post,” Shettron said. “Coach (Kasey) Dunn’s been saying we need to throw more posts. When I saw it called, I kinda knew that it was going to get thrown. I wrapped my guy and just ran as fast as I could, and the ball was there. Great throw by Alan (Bowman). …
“Don’t get caught. Don’t get caught. Don’t get caught. Don’t get caught. That was the thing that was going through my head.”
Since we’ve already mentioned Wallace and Bryant in this story, why not also throw out James Washington? When I think of an OSU receiver running a post route and galloping away from defensive backs, that’s what goes through my mind.
Now, let’s not get too hyperbolic. Mentioning Shettron in the same breath as Bryant, Wallace and Washington is probably unfair to Shettron at this point. This was just one game, one moment in time. But the elation OSU fans had when a high-level prospect flipped from their Beldam rival might be starting to be realized.
“Unfortunately, he’s been beat up injury-wise in his career, and he had a really good August and is starting to show signs of wanting to take that next step,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “And he’s had some catches in the games before this one. And then today, he had an opportunity to do some things, kind of on a big stage for him. And I thought that he played pretty well.”
