Thanksgiving Stress to Cowboy Commitment: Quarterback Broderick Vehrs Signs with OSU

‘Those days, you know, over Thanksgiving were definitely a little stressful, but I’m happy it happened the way it did.’

It’s been a hectic week for Broderick Vehrs, but that’s almost been standard issue for his past six months.

Vehrs, a quarterback out of Chandler, Arizona, signed with Oklahoma State on Wednesday about six months removed from committing to FCS Northern Arizona.

Not long after that commitment to NAU, Eric Morris and North Texas started turning up the recruiting dial on Vehrs, and he flipped his commitment to the Group of Five Mean Green.

But then Morris took the Oklahoma State job, officially being announced last week. That put Vehrs’ future in a little bit of limbo for a few days.

“It was pretty stressful,” Vehrs told PFB on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s kind of like you want to ask questions, but at the same time, you know, you don’t even know if they have the answers to the questions. It’s just there’s so much unknown, and you just have to wait and you kind of just have to swallow the doubt and swallow the stuff that isn’t sitting right. Luckily it all worked out perfectly. But those days, you know, over Thanksgiving were definitely a little stressful, but I’m happy it happened the way it did. It’s looking up now.”

Vehrs (pronounced VEERs) said he got the call this weekend asking him if he wanted to join Morris in Stillwater.

“It’s been stressful for them as well, just because, you know, they’re in the middle of their season,” Vehrs said. “They have a championship game this week. So, they’re putting a lot of time and effort into their school. I kind of just had to wait patiently for the call. And then this weekend, I got the call, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m 1,000% in, there’s no doubt in my mind.'”

Morris has made a habit of finding high-level quarterbacks where others aren’t necessarily looking.

He recruited Cam Ward to Incarnate Word before Ward would go on to become the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. More recently, Morris turned Drew Mestemaker from a guy who didn’t start a varsity game at quarterback in high school into the nation’s leading passer as a redshirt freshman at UNT.

So, while six months ago Vehrs was committed to an FCS school, Morris has already proven he can hit on a quarterback recruit no matter the circumstance.

“That’s thing with recruiting, so many kids have different paths,” Vehrs said. “I mean, take Cam Ward for example: He’s had one FCS offer out of high school, and now he’s known the number one draft picking the NFL. So, it’s just a bunch of different paths. Some people kind of have to, you know, work their way up. It all worked out the way I think it’s supposed to.”

Although his team, Basha High School, will play for a state title this weekend, Vehrs won’t get to play. He fractured his left collarbone earlier in the year. He told PFB that he is just about to be fully healed and that he intends on getting to Stillwater this winter for workouts.

Speaking of Stillwater, Vehrs signed sight unseen. He hasn’t made the voyage to Payne County yet but has been doing his research and has been told to check out Eskimo Joes.

Vehrs on what he likes about Eric Morris

“Just his personality. He just has kind of dog and the personality you want to play for. Going to the practices, watching the practices, he has energy. And, from what I see, he’s a great family guy. And also he’s just about relationships. He won’t sugarcoat, he won’t lie about anything. He’ll tell you straight up what the recruiting process is like, where I’m at, and I want to have transparency. I really appreciated that. That was just super attractive in my recruiting process, looking for a coach who has that, and I really appreciate everything he did. Like the relationships, he just tries to make relationships with my family. It was just super, super refreshing to have a coach actually care about you more than your athletic ability.”
