Oklahoma State had a successful weekend on the diamond, as the Cowboys and Cowgirls went a combined 8-1.

The Cowgirls were down in San Marcos for the River State Classic, while the Cowboys where out west in a four-game series against Grand Canyon.

Both will have their home openers this week, but let’s highlight the weekend that was.

Cowgirls in San Marcos

Weekend Results:
Kansas City — W, 12-1 (5 inn.)
Texas State — W, 5-0
Brown — W, 14-0 (5 inn.)
Colorado State — W, 10-0 (5 inn.)
Brown — W, 17-0 (5 inn.)

Overall Record: 11-4

The Big Picture: After facing almost exclusively ranked foes in the first two weekends of the year, the Cowgirls went down to San Marcos and dominated what would be considered lesser competition, outscoring their five opponents a combined 58-1. Not too shabby.

Standout Performances:

Ruby Meylan — Meylan has already been an All-American twice, but she threw her first career no-hitter in the Cowgirls’ 10-0 win against Colorado State.

She needed just 46 pitches to complete the feat, throwing all five of the game’s innings. She struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. The only thing that kept this from being a perfect game was a throwing error in the second inning to give the Rams a base runner.

Meylan also threw the entire Texas State game, where she allowed just one hit while striking out seven and walking two.

So, her weekend total was 13 innings pitched, one hit, no runs allowed.

Claire Timm — The Timm Reaper had herself a weekend. Taking part in all five games, Timm went 8-for-11 (.727) at the plate with six runs scored, and nine RBIs.

Timm became the first player in program history to hit multiple triples in multiple games in a career when she went 3-for-3 against Kansas City with the two three-baggers. She had a pair of triples in a game against Penn State last season, as well.

Timm carries a .485 season batting average into this week, which is best among Cowgirls with more than 10 at-bats.

Preslee Downing — A freshman pitcher, Downing threw nine innings this past weekend and gave up a singular run.

It started with the Kansas City game, where Downing threw all five innings and gave up one run off three hits while striking out four and not issuing a walk.

She then threw four innings in the second game against Brown, where she didn’t allow a run and gave up just two hits while striking out four.

She has a 1.26 ERA through her first 16 2/3 innings of college softball, giving up just three earned runs while striking out 12 and walking three.

Cowboys vs. Grand Canyon

Weekend Results:
Thursday — L, 12-8
Friday — W, 9-1
Saturday — W, 10-7
Sunday — W, 13-2 (7 inn.)

Overall Record: 4-3

The Big Picture: After a 1-2 start to the season in a tough multi-team event in Arlington, the Cowboys went to the desert and took three of four off the Antelopes.

Standout Performances:

Aidan Meola — Meola earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors. He has struggled with injuries throughout his OSU career, but when he’s been on the field, he’s been productive.

He got at least one hit in every game against the Lopes, going 8-for-19 (.421) on the weekend with eight runs scored and 11 RBIs. Not only did he get a hit in every game, he also hit a home run in every game — his first four of the season.

Kollin Ritchie — The Atoka Wampus Cat also got at least a hit in all of the Cowboys’ games against GCU, going a combined 7-for-18 (.388) at the dish with six runs scored and nine RBIs.

He homered Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, bringing his total to five round-trippers through OSU’s first seven games.

Ritchie is hitting .355 on the season and leads the Cowboys in runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage.

Hudson Barrett — A transfer pitcher from UC-Santa Barbara, Barrett started the Cowboys’ Friday game, and had an excellent outing.

He threw 94 pitches across six innings where he didn’t allow a run while striking out nine, walking one and hitting another batter.

That performance moved his season ERA down to a 2.53 through his first 10 2/3 innings as a Cowboy.
