‘Life You Dream Of’: Drew Mestemaker Embracing Role as the New Face of Oklahoma State Football
‘It’s what you work for every day.’
STILLWATER — Drew Mestemaker looks every bit the quarterback that led Oklahoma State’s resurgence to the edges of college football’s national discussion as a contender this spring.
But he rarely sounds like that guy.
“I feel like I’m just a normal guy that plays football,” Mestemaker said on Saturday.
If not for a few drops by one of his go-to receivers, his passing day would have looked even better. Instead, he finished only 13-of-20 for 260 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
His humility carried over into the discussion of his lone mistake of the day, which happened to come on his very first throw.
“I think it went good,” he said. “Obviously, first play, not how you drew it up. But that’s just what happens when you’ve got a good defense on the other side, they’ll make plays, too. I’m glad they’re on our team.”
Throughout the spring, several of his long-time North Texas teammates who made the transfer alongside Mestemaker praised his ability to remain the same guy he always was, even after the former high school backup turned into one of the portal’s top players a few months ago.
Although Mestemaker got a taste of what was to come when he took pictures with fans at the Iowa State wrestling dual earlier this year, he has continued to be impressed with what it means to be Oklahoma State’s QB1.
“One, the support, everywhere you go,” Mestemaker said. “I’ll go into Walmart to get dinner for the day, and you’ve got people saying, ‘Good luck this year,’ or whatever.
“And it’s just awesome to feel that support everywhere you go. You’ve got eyes on you everywhere, so you have to build up that image everywhere you go, but I think it’s good for the school and the amount of support we have around here.”
While he’s mostly enjoyed the attention, Mestemaker said it does take getting used to and still feels weird for him at times.
Following Saturday’s spring game in front of an estimated crowd of 13,000, Mestemaker said it was awesome to get a taste of what is to come during the season when Boone Pickens is packed.
Just another way his life has changed since he arrived in Stillwater.
“It’s definitely been crazy,” Mestemaker said. “It’s been different than North Texas, that’s for sure. But it’s the life you dream of as a kid, and it’s what you work for every day. So, it’s been awesome.”
