Drew Mestemaker Appearing in Way-Too-Early 2027 NFL Mock Drafts

OSU has had three QBs drafted since 2000.

Oklahoma State has produced one first-round quarterback in its program history, and that guy led the Cowboys to their best season in program history (1945 not withstanding).

Oklahoma State could have its second first-round QB on campus, especially if you’re a consumer of way-too-early mock drafts. With the NFL’s Draft taking place last weekend, myriads of early look-aheads to next year’s draft dropped this week, and some of those feature new OSU quarterback Drew Mestemaker going in the first round.

ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo all released mocks that have Mestemaker being taken on Day 1.

The draft order means nothing at this point (you could argue none of this means anything at this point) because no one has played any games, but for what it’s worth, ESPN and Sports Illustrated each had Mestemaker going 14th overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Funnily enough, the Steelers were the last to draft an OSU QB, taking Mason Rudolph in the third round back in 2018.

Yahoo’s was more of a “top prospects” list than a typical mock draft, and that outlet had him as a Top 30 NFL prospect going into next season.

This week brought news that, in an indirect way, probably helped Mestemaker’s chances of being a first-round pick. Texas Tech quaterback Brendan Sorsby was the No. 8 pick in a CBS mock draft that released Sunday. On Monday, news broke that Sorsby was checking into a program for gambling addiction, putting his football future very much up in the air.

As far as other quarterbacks mentioned in the mocks, Arch Manning (Texas) and Dante Moore (Oregon) appear to be the two surefire QB selections in next year’s first round with all but Yahoo having both of those guys go within the first three picks. Yahoo had Moore going 10th overall.

Other quarterbacks who appeared in those mocks were LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), Drake Lindsey (Minnesota) and CJ Carr (Notre Dame). So, as you’re looking to see where OSU’s quarterback stacks up among the best in the country next season, that’s the competition for now.

It’s not a do-or-die year as it pertains to the draft for Mestemaker, as he’ll only be entering his redshirt sophomore season, meaning he could still technically play three more seasons of college football.

If he does end up going into the draft next season, it would mean Eric Morris and Co. would have to hit an early reset button on the most important position in the sport, but it’d also mean OSU probably had a really special year.

OSU has had three quarterbacks drafted since 2000: Zac Robinson (seventh round in 2010), Brandon Weeden (first round in 2012) and Rudolph (third round in 2018). And if you ask OSU fans who the Cowboys’ best three QBs have been since the turn of the century, they probably list those three guys fairly quickly.

So, while it might be a little scary for OSU fans to think about losing a stud QB (the likes of which the fanbase hasn’t had in some time) after just one season, the joy that one season would provide would almost certainly be worth the tradeoff.
