PFB Picks: Predicting Oklahoma State’s Week 2 Game Against No. 6 Oregon

Predicting the Cowboys vs. the Ducks.

After we all picked Oklahoma State to win comfortably last week, we’ve picked ourselves up by our bootstraps and come ready to guess again.

Oklahoma State hosts No. 6 Oregon at 11 a.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium. Here is how we see the game shaking out.

(These uniform picks came in before OSU did its early drop. If you don’t believe that I guessed it 100% correctly, it’s on video).

Marshall Scott

Uniform: White (Patriot Pete) — Orange — White (NAILED IT)

Drew Mestemaker over/under 250 passing yards: Over

Tulsa’s gameplan was to slow the game down. On top of that, left tackle Jacob Sexton went down just six plays and and the offensive line seemingly never recovered. With a week to work without Sexton and the fact that I think there will be more possessions in this game, I think Mestemaker hits the over here even with the jump up in competition.

OSU’s Second-Leading Rusher: Tre Page III

There are few things coaches hate more than a running back putting the ball on the turf. That’s what happened to Tre Page early in Tulsa, and he didn’t get another shot. With Morris challenging the Cowboys’ running back depth this week, I think Page regains ahold on his spot and the football.

Score: Oregon 38, Oklahoma State 21

I have to believe this would feel like a notable improvement from last week, though hosting Oregon isn’t exactly the ideal bounce-back opportunity. Had the Cowboy offense not been stuffed on four fourth downs, OSU might’ve won in Tulsa but it would’ve at the very least looked a lot less ugly. I say, notable improvement but that doesn’t exactly put the Cowboys in the same class as the Ducks.

Kyle Cox

Uniform: Black (Pete) — Orange — Black

Drew Mestemaker over/under 250 passing yards: Over

I’ll go over to be optimistic. I still hold out some hope that some of the bugs will get worked out and/or OSU hits on a big play or two.

OSU’s Second-Leading Rusher: Ayo Adeyi

I guess I’ll go with Ayo Adeyi. I wonder just how sparing Morris and Co. can be with Caleb Hawkins this week when they badly need to sustain drives. So I think, at least early, it’s going to be heavy on Hawkins until and unless it gets out of hand. Then give me Adeyi to get the carries next.

Score: Oregon 45, Oklahoma State 21

I’m doubling down on the optimism. I think the Cowboys even keep it close for a bit in the first half. Ultimately, they succumb to the better team, but I think you’d have to look at a result like this as some type of progress.

Tyler Waldrep

Uniform: White (Brand) — Orange — White

Drew Mestemaker over/under 250 passing yards: Over

If the Cowboys beat or stay close to the Ducks then Mestemaker likely had a career day. And well if that’s not the case, though Oregon’s defense is much better than Tulsa’s, a less competitive game should only boost Mestemaker’s stats as he’s forced to sling it even more. Plus, he hit or cleared 250 yards in eight of his last nine games prior to last week’s collapse.

OSU’s Second-Leading Rusher: Ayo Adeyi

Page was the clear-cut No. 2 back, but he didn’t touch the ball again following his fumble. Morris said the No. 2 back would be an open competition this week, but it sounds like Page could still be in the doghouse. Plus, Adeyi averaged more yards per carry, picked up one more yard after contact and forced one additional missed tackle despite carrying the ball sixt times to Page’s seven.

Score: Oregon 42, Oklahoma State 17

It’s hard to know exactly what to think of the Cowboys, but it’s hard to feel good about these tackles going against the Ducks’ front seven. I think Mestemaker looks better even if the offensive line continues to struggle, but that won’t be near enough.

We’re keeping score on predictions this year. The writers and Reload members will all make the same predictions, just as we did in Week 1.

You get a point for every aspect of the uniform you guess correctly, and there are three points available when it comes to the score — one for guessing the correct winner, two for beating the spread (Oregon -22.5) and a third goes to whichever one of us was closest to the pin actual score.
