100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 48 Dawson Bassett

At No. 48 on our countdown, we’ll focus on a special teams contributor who came to Stillwater with family ties to Oklahoma State already intact.

How he got to OSU

The all-state linebacker from Tuttle came to Oklahoma State one year after his older brother, former Cowboys lineman Cooper Bassett, had finished his collegiate career. At Tuttle High School, the younger Bassett earned Class 3A Defensive Player of the Year honors with 106 tackles, three interceptions and four sacks. He was also a productive pass catcher from the tight end spot.

What he’s done in Stillwater

Has been a consistent special teams contributor since his redshirt year in 2013. Played in eight games as a junior, including the last seven games of 2016.

Role in 2017

While we can expect Bassett to continue his special teams production, roster turnover may allow increased opportunity for him at cowboy back. Gone are Blake Jarwin and Zac Veatch who carried the brunt of the tight end/fullback load in 2016. Even considering the likelihood that OSU features more four- or five-wide sets, the cowboy back isn’t going away. And Bassett could push for an increased role as both a pass catcher and blocker.

Noteworthy stats and highlights

In high school, Bassett racked up 780 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns as a tight end. Recovered a fumble against UTSA in 2015.
