A Statistical Update of Oklahoma State after That Uninspiring Texas Game
The Cowboys got the win against Texas last weekend but there was nothing fun about the way OSU’s offense stumbled on its own feet. The Cowboys were the class of college football offensively heading into Austin and return a little worse for wear.
So I thought it was worth looking at the ramifications that ugly showing inside Darrell K Royal had on what was a stellar statistical profile through the first half of the season.
PPR = Points per red zone trip

Team Stats
 Team Stats | Before Texas | After Texas | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Value | National Rank | Value | National Rank | |
Scoring Offense | 48.8 | 2 | 43.7 | 3 |
Passing Yards | 411.2 | 1 | 392.7 | 1 |
Off. PPD | 4.34 | 1 | 3.63 | 3 |
Def. PPD | 1.82 | 42 | 1.61 | 27 |
Net PPD | 2.53 | 4 | 2.02 | 8 |
PPR | 2.53 | 6 (Big 12) | 4.76 | 7 (Big 12) |
Def. PPR | 4.39 | 4 (Big 12) | 4.27 | 4 (Big 12) |
The Cowboys remain ahead of the class in passing yards but slipped a bit in scoring offense after being held to a baker’s dozen. Points per drive on offense obviously took a hit, but the defensive PPD is up to 27th nationally after stifling the Horns.
Red-zone offense also took a step back after being held scoreless twice inside the 20 and being held to field goals on two of the three scores. That fumble inside the 10-yard line didn’t help either.
Mason Rudolph
Rudolph | Before Texas | After Texas | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Value | Rank | Value | Rank | |
Passing Yards | 394.7 | 1 | 378.6 | 1 |
Completion % | 66.7% |  — | 66.5% |  — |
Passer Rating | 191.00 | 3 | 181.11 | 3 |
Total QBR | 90.6 | 2 | 86.9 | 2 |
Rudolph took a little dip in the passing totals but is still tops nationally in yards per game. The slight dip in passer rating and QBR are based on not throwing for a touchdown for just the fifth time in his career (as a starter).
Rudolph’s already lapped Brandon Weeden as the all-time passer at OSU and has his eye set on a couple of more records, including the all-important win total which he tied with his head coach in Austin.
James Washington
Washington | Before Texas | After Texas | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Value | Rank | Value | Rank | |
Receiving Yards | 147.0 | 1 | 130.6 | 1 |
Yards Per Catch | 28.8 | 2 | 24.1 | 6 |
Target Rate | 73.9% | — | 71.7% |  — |
Washington has been on an historic tear so far this year so I guess he was due for a 2016 KU game-type game. Washington hauled in four of his seven targets but was held to 32 yards and zero scores.
Washington is still on-pace to pass Rashaun Woods as the all-time receiver. He just needs to average 96.2 yards the rest of the regular season plus the bowl game to match Woods. Before the trip to Austin, his lowest outing was 98 yards against South Alabama so I’d still be confident in his prospects.
