Arizona QB Grant Gunnell Transferring to Memphis
The former top target for OSU is headed to Memphis.
Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell, considered one of the top transfers on the open market after entering the transfer portal last week on the heels of the program’s decision to move on from Kevin Sumlin, has committed to transferring to Memphis, according to 247Sports.
Gunnell was a top target for Oklahoma State coming out of Houston’s St. Pius X High School in 2019. At one point OSU was considered the frontrunner to land his services before picking the Wildcats, a decision that allowed him to follow Kevin Sumlin — the coach he committed to when he originally pledged to Texas A&M in the first round of his recruitment.
It doesn’t appear as if Oklahoma State made any real winky-faces at Gunnell as a transfer in an effort to lure him to Stillwater, but the timing and circumstances made it plausible for a Gunnell-Gundy pairing. OSU did not take a scholarship quarterback recruit in the 2021 class and has questions to answer at the position ahead of next season after inconsistent play from both Spencer Sanders and Shane Illingworth this season.
Gunnell played in just four games for Arizona this season, but flashed real potential in that span, completing 64-of-93 pass attempts (68.8%) for 625 yards and six scores as a sophomore. As a freshman in 2019 he completed 65.2% of his pass attempts in eight games of action, recording 1,239 yards through the air for nine scores and only one INT.
This doesn’t entirely preclude OSU from potentially taking on a quarterback this offseason either via the graduate transfer market or traditional transfer avenue, but it’s unclear if OSU is on the hunt. On signing day, Mike Gundy was non-committal about plans for the position in the immediate future, saying only that the positions addressed were the ones that “we needed to fill to solidify the numbers that we look for by position across our board.”
Pending no movements on that front, it gives OSU a returning core of Spencer Sanders, Shane Illingworth and Ethan Bullock for next season. Dual-sport standout Nolan McLean, considered a future pro in baseball, is also on the OSU football roster.
