‘Best Pound-for-Pound QB Developer in All of College Football’: What National Guys Are Saying About OSU Hiring Eric Morris
‘I think he chose Oklahoma State over Arkansas.’
It’s been evident since the announcement that people in and around Stillwater are generally fired up about Oklahoma State hiring Eric Morris as its next football coach.
But what about how the hire is viewed nationally?
In trying to inject as much Morris content into my veins over the past 24 hours, I’ve listened to a lot of college football podcasts to see what some of the country’s talking heads think about Morris and the OSU job in general.
The sentiment seems positive for OSU and has a few Arkansas ricochet shots sprinkled in. Here is some of what I’ve heard over the past 24 hours.
Josh Pate: “I thought he was going to Arkansas, guys. I think he had an offer to Arkansas, and this is just what I’ve heard, I think he chose Oklahoma State over Arkansas. …
“I think at Oklahoma State, they probably sold him that, ‘We can do what Texas Tech is doing. We’ve got big money here, too. We can be the next Texas Tech.’ That’s gonna be about half a dozen Big 12 schools’ pitches over the next 12 to 24 months, by the way.
“So, good hire. The Tom Fornelli line, we’re gonna license it from Fornelli: Great hire, I have no idea whether it’ll work out.”
Shehan Jeyarajah: “I absolutely love the hire. Honestly, the second that Mike Gundy was fired, I thought that Eric Morris would be a perfect fit for a number of reasons. First, you look at the way Oklahoma State was built, the way that this team is used to experiencing football — I feel like Eric Morris will be able to bring so much of that back.
“He, I would argue, is the best pound-for-pound quarterback developer in all of college football. I’m including Ryan Day. I’m including Lincoln Riley in that. He is up there with the greats. He also is somebody who just schemes up offense at an incredibly high level.”
Bud Elliot: “Eric Morris has done a really nice job there at North Texas. Did a nice job at Incarnate Word before that, so I think it’s probably a good hire. As Tom (Fornelli) says, great hire, no idea if it’ll work out.
“I think it’s probably smart to take Oklahoma State over Arkansas because I think it’s just so much harder to win at Arkansas than it is Oklahoma State.”
By the way, Fornelli did, in fact, do the thing:

Greg McElroy: “If you talk to people within the coaching search world, you talk to people within the agent world and you talk to coaches, the Oklahoma State job is highly desirable. What does every coach want? They want continuity. They want comfort. They want to know that they’re gonna be somewhere for a very long time, so the fact that Mike Gundy was there for 21 years, one of the longest-tenured coaches in college football, makes this job really appealing.
“What also makes this job very appealing is they are very competitive from an NIL standpoint compared to some of the teams they’ll be competing against in the Big 12. They also have another thing going for them: they have a ton, a ton of infrastructure in place by way of skyboxes and a great gameday atmosphere that continues to flush a lot of money into the program. So, this is a really appealing job.”
