Big 12 Update: Texas Tops USC, Kansas Scores 55 on Rutgers

Given the sample size three weeks in, I think it’s safe to say the Big 12 isn’t the worst of the Power Five Conferences. It might even be hanging in there for top two considerations.

The conference went 2-2 against opposing Power Five schools this weekend (shout out Kansas). Here’s a recap of all the Big 12 games from Week 3.

Texas 37, No. 22 USC 14

Wow, Texas didn’t lay an egg.

USC ran for negative-five yards Saturday night — not ideal — putting the pressures of scoring points on the shoulders of true freshman quarterback JT Daniels. Daniels was 30-for-48 with 322 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s 45 percent completion percentage wasn’t outstanding, but Ehlinger was able to take care of the football, throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 35 yards and another score.

USC got shafted on a safety that wasn’t called in the second quarter. The Trojans should’ve had a 16-13 lead and the ball with about six minutes to go in the half, but somehow the officiating crew determined this wasn’t a safety after a review.

You could argue this would’ve changed a lot of the game, but given the comfort that Texas was able to win with, I’m going to say the Longhorns probably would’ve won regardless.

No. 4 Ohio State 40, No. 15 TCU 28

In the third quarter, the Horned Frogs led 21-13, and it all went downhill from there.

The big decider in this game was TCU’s three turnovers to Ohio State’s zero, as the teams’ total yards was only split by 15.

Darius Anderson scored a 93-yard touchdown in the second quarter. It was the longest run an Ohio State team has ever given up. He finished with 154 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 5 Oklahoma 37, Iowa State 27

Big 12 play started with a tight one in Ames. It’s not like the Sooners played poorly either. Iowa State just played them tough.

Kyler Murray is a lot of fun to watch. He finished with 348 yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-29 passing with another 77 yards on the ground. A worrying note for OU is that Murray was the Sooners leading rusher after star running back Rodney Anderson got injured last weekend. Murray’s 15 carries were the most of any Sooner.

On the Iowa State side, Hakeem Butler is a stud. Butler, a 6-6 wide receiver, caught five passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Bringing him down seems tough.

Kansas 55, Rutgers 14 (No, Seriously)

In a battle of “How are these football programs in Power Five conferences?” Kansas throttled the Scarlet Knights. Good news: The Jayhawks are undefeated against FBS schools this year. Bad news: They have still lost a game.

The win marks the first time KU has beaten two FBS opponents in a row since 2009. The game started as a total dumpster fire, with two scores coming from pick-sixes and another a blocked field goal attempt returned 64 yards, but eventually KU settled in. The Jayhawks won the turnover battle 6-0 (!!!).

Pooka Williams had 158 rushing yards, and he was one of four Jayhawks to throw a pass because of course.

Duke 40, Baylor 27

The Blue Devils were able to find success running against Baylor, as Duke finished with 225 rushing yards. Duke’s backup quarterback Quentin Harris also threw three touchdowns and no interceptions in place of an injured Daniel Jones.

The Bears are still rolling with their two-quarterback system. Charlie Brewer went 14-for-26 with 175 yards, no passing touchdowns but two rushing touchdowns, while Jalan McClendon was 10-of-16 for 95 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a team-high 51 rushing yards.

Kansas State 41, UTSA 17

Speaking of two-quarterback systems, it looks like K-State has landed on Skylar Thompson. Thompson had 213 passing yards, a team-high 66 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.

Alex Delton threw only one pass Saturday, and it went 72 yards for a touchdown. Isaiah Zuber caught that pass. Zuber finished with 144 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Texas Tech 63, Houston 49

What a classic Texas Tech score.

True freshman quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 605 yards and five touchdowns. The 605 passing yards in a Big 12 freshman record, breaking Patrick Mahomes’ previous mark. Wide receiver Antoine Wesley had a school record 261 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Together, Bowman and Houston quarterback D’Eriq King threw 110 passes for 1,036 yards and 10 touchdowns.

No. 14 West Virginia, NC State — Canceled
