Boynton, the evaluator.

Mike Boynton will help select the next crop of talent to play for USA Basketball.

Oklahoma State’s coach, Boynton will go down to Fort Worth June 20-22 to help evaluate and select players for the 2021 U19 World Cup in Latvia. Although Boynton won’t join the team in Europe as a traditional assistant, his inclusion in this evaluation process is still quite the accomplishment for the 39-year-old coach.

The goal for Boynton and other coaches will be to trim the list of 27 camp-goers down to the 12-man roster bound for Latvia.

In some years, this could be a pseudo-recruiting opportunity for coaches, but all 27 players invited to this year’s camp are either in college or committed or signed with a school.

The Cowboys had two players on the 2019 U19 World Cup team, something TV announcers referenced at nauseum this past season. Isaac Likekele and Cade Cunningham (prior to signing with OSU) teamed up to win gold in Greece.

Matt Clark (1979), Jawun Evans (2015) and Marcus Smart (2013) have also represented OSU at the event, all also taking home gold medals.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon is the 2021 U19 World Cup team’s head coach. Stanford’s Jerod Haase and Yale’s James Jones will join Dixon as assistant coaches.
