For a second straight season, the Cowgirls will enter the year ranked 22nd in the country.

The women’s basketball preseason AP Poll was announced on Tuesday, showing Oklahoma State at No. 22. The Cowgirls are one of three Big 12 teams in the ranking, joining No. 15 TCU and No. 24 West Virginia.

Here is the poll in full:

Rank Team
1 South Carolina
2 UConn
3 USC
4 Duke
5 Michigan
6 Texas
7 Louisville
8 Vanderbilt
9 LSU
10 Iowa
11 UCLA
12 North Carolina
13 Notre Dame
14 Kentucky
15 TCU
16 Washington
17 Minnesota
18 Ohio State
19 Ole Miss
20 Maryland
21 Oklahoma
22 Oklahoma State
23 Illinois
24 West Virginia
25 NC State

This marks the first time since 2014 the Cowgirls have been in the preseason AP Poll for back-to-back seasons. OSU stared the season ranked three years in a row from 2012-14.

It’s interesting that these rankings are somewhat notably different than the Big 12’s preseason coaches poll that released earlier this month. The coaches picked the Cowgirls to win the league.

There were a handful of Big 12 teams just outside the Top 25, with Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas, and Colorado all in the receiving votes category.

There will also be opportunities for ranked wins outside of the league.

OSU will play No. 16 Washington as part of the Coconut Hoops Tournament on Nov. 27 in Florida. The Cowgirls will play No. 1 South Carolina on Dec. 6 in Columbia, South Carolina, and they’ll play No. 21 Oklahoma on Dec. 12 in Oklahoma City. So, the opportunity for forward movement is there.

The Cowgirls unofficially open their season Tuesday with an exhibition against Langston. The season gets going for real on Nov. 2 when OSU hosts Southern.
