Daily Bullets (August 1) – Holgo on Gundy’s Golden Years, Deja Vu in 2018 Cowboy Football?
(Not Quite) Approaching Golden Years
Dana Holgorsen was weighing in on Big 12 topics and had some comments about Mike Gundy.
“Gundy’s got a lot left. I don’t know if he’s got Bill Snyder years left. He’s got a lot left. He seems very comfortable. I’ve enjoyed our relationship over the last several years. I tell him this all the time. He was really uptight. Worried about a lot of things. I don’t see that out of him anymore. He seems very comfortable. Very relaxed. Has done a heck of a job with that entire program. And Coach (Mike) Holder has done a good job with that entire athletic department. Tell Mike I said that.” [NewsOK]
Dana’s point that jumps out to me is the transition in style as a coach, a CEO of the program. On one hand, running a motor that hot would seem to burn out a guy early, changing to the current state of mind seems more sustainable. On the other hand, at $5 million a year, there’s incentive to take it easy and enjoy the money sooner than later.
Evens or Odds
When you work at predicting the 2018 season, does it seem more like the 2013 or 2014 season to you?
Over the past eight years, the Cowboys best seasons can basically be broken up into two categories — the Brandon Weeden era and the Mason Rudolph era. In their five seasons as OSU starters, Weeden and Rudolph combined for 53 victories.
In the three years between Weeden and Rudolph, without an established franchise quarterback, the Cowboys were 25-14.
So will this season be like 2013 when little-heralded Clint Chelf came off the bench to save the day and a 10-win season? Or will it be like 2014, when OSU needed an overtime miracle in Norman to avoid a losing record. [TulsaWorld]
