State of O-State

OSU president Burns Hargis went on a local news station recently and had some thoughts on the conference as a whole.

“We’re doing very well,” Hargis told the other panelist on Flashpoint. Hargis emphasized that the Big 12 is not looking to expand at this point. As for television rights and possibility of a conference network, Hargis thinks the Big 12 might have without intention stumbled into the best and most financially lucrative possibility.

“The whole digital world, according to research it’s an enormous percentage of males, somewhere between the early teens and the age of 34, something like that, that watch 60 percent of their sports on a mobile device,” Hargis quoted it sounds like loosely. “In a way we may have just out of blind dumb luck that we didn’t do a conference network deal and now anything is in the cards.”

Hargis said besides the ESPN and Fox entities you could be negotiating with a fatter group of originators that include the likes of rich companies like Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu.

He flat out said the Big 12 is not looking to expand and like many college sports experts suggested, “The next time you will see that will be around 2025 when the television contracts are up.” [Go Poke$]

A lot can change in seven years, but the ace-in-the-hole for Big 12 survival/thriving is a massively lucrative deal with a streaming service. Always good to get an update on conference realignment – seems like UCF is developing a TCU-esque brand in Florida.

Knowles’ Backers

While the frontline numbers won’t change, how the shift from three linebackers to two and five defensive backs from four concerning personnel groupings will be interesting.

In December, Mike Gundy expressed his desire to have more 190- to 200-pound players on the field who could cover and help against the run, which led to the Cowboys signing either seven or eight defensive backs, depending on which group the 6-foot, 210-pound Peel ends up in.

While the secondary depth will rely heavily on that group of signees, the linebacker depth gets a boost from condensing from three positions to two — even if a player like Bundage moves to safety. [NewsOK]

Possibly a bit of foreshadowing there by Gundy, the defensive back-heavy class left no doubt about their necessity.

The linebacker surplus interests me and how Knowles will use the talent on the roster. It appears he has a good eye for developing who he’s got.
