Solomon’s Day in the Sun
Will Mitchell Solomon, one of the more prolific rebounders in recent history, be most well-known for a play in the open court?
“Biggest play in the game: Stealing the ball from (Young), who will probably be the national player of the year … and then absolutely giving everything he has so his team can have a chance to win.”
Solomon has recorded more than 2,000 minutes of Oklahoma State playing time, and the great majority of that time was spent in the paint, but his biggest defensive play so far occurred with 45 seconds left in the second half Saturday — the steal that happened in the Sooners backcourt.
“I’m not necessarily a guy who plays away from the basket,” Solomon said, “but, luckily, I was able to make the play today that made a big impact on the game.” [TulsaWorld]
That open court play was a microcosm of the game – hard work beats talent when talent gets off the bus thinking they’ll win by 20 (again). Another option is to complain post-game, regardless of how many other calls went your way.
“(Solomon) went across my chest,” Young said. “You’re not allowed to do that. It’s a foul. The ref didn’t call it, so you move on.” [TulsaWorld]
Optimism by Default?
As Mike Gundy revamps his coaching staff with new GAs, an analyst and a couple of assistant coaches, is there reason to be optimistic about a long-held “reloading season”?
The year 2018 is going to be one where OSU is considered down and reloading after losing Rudolph and co…but the fact that everyone else in the league is also getting weaker means there may be more of an opportunity next year for the ‘Pokes than many are assuming. You can be sure Gundy is going to dedicate as much brainpower as possible to figuring out how to take advantage. [Concerning Sports]
I’m on the record that Oklahoma State pays Gundy $5m not because he wins 11-12 wins a year – but because his 6 to 7 win floor is super high for rebuilding seasons in a non-traditional program (plus the whole ten-win thing).

Fran makes it sound like the Sooners lost more than the Pokes won (sans the toughness comment).
Had not to love Trae Young but three things stood out in loss to Oklahoma State: 1. Tougher team today won this game 2. Oklahoma D will not beat elite teams 3. Sooner teammates not playing with confidence of a month ago.
