OSU Bullets

• Bat Flip U? (Credit for that moniker here) Trevor Boone hit his 20th HR with two outs in the ninth against Nebraska late on Saturday evening with the Pokes trailing 5-3, and it was a no-doubter. It was also improbable, unexpected and wonderful. Marshall Scott was there to cover it, and his five thoughts piece is a must read.

Legend has it, Boone’s smash hit off the H of the “Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark” sign that overlooks left field.

Others wondered if it hit the parking garage beyond the stadium. Some might say the ball found it’s way back to Allie P. Reynolds Stadium to give the ole ballpark the last NCAA Regional it deserved. [PFB]

Also, I cannot stop watching.

If OSU goes on to win on Sunday against the Nebraska-UConn winner, they’ll likely get Texas Tech in a super regional. Red Raiders are undefeated so far and in the exact same position as OSU currently is.

• On the work that’s gone into providing space for another tournament a week after the last one ended in OKC and why it’s been hard to cater to the NCAA.

The Dodgers had to change some signs to meet NCAA regulations regarding alcohol and gambling. The “Budweiser” in Budweiser Deck was covered by a gray tarp. Three signs in right field — one for Draft Kings, one for Newcastle Casino and one for the Dodgers’ 50/50 raffle — were removed. [NewsOK]

The best part of this for me is that OKC had to change its ticket policy. It lets kids under age 2 in for free because, you know, that’s normal. The NCAA? Charges every human, which is very on brand for the NCAA.

Bill Haisten also wrote on how comfortable OSU is in OKC, and it’s great.

In May, OSU is 11-2. The month began with a statement by the Cowboys — a three-game road sweep of then-No. 2 Oregon State.

The month ends on Friday — not at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, which would have been the best-case scenario, but in Oklahoma City. There’s no place like home, but these Cowboys do seem quite comfortable in Oklahoma City. [Tulsa World]

• OSU softball’s season ended 1-0 to Washington on Saturday, but the last few weeks have been straight magic. Kyle Boone wrote about the ending, but Sam Show got some national love here in a SB Nation feature.

“It doesn’t happen every time,” she insists, explaining that she’ll only flip her bat if she knows instantly it’s out of the park — and if the run gives her team a tie or the lead. “Whenever the ball’s hit and I know it’s out, I have so many strong emotions inside me. If I could, I would just sit there and not know what to do. But obviously I have to run around the base pads, so my emotions come out in my bat.” [SB Nation]

It’s a great piece about bat flips and life, and you should definitely read it. Also, how good is this following the UW loss?

• OSU is raiding Del City. Offers on the defensive side are pouring in for Del City stars, and Jim Knowles is trying to convince one pair to play together in Stillwater (Baylor has also offered both).

Oklahoma State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jim Knowles must have liked what he saw out of both Tatum and outside linebacker Donavan Stephens when he saw them at an Eagles spring football practice at the school on Sunny Lane off I-40. We saw both at the Edmond Santa Fe Team Camp earlier this week and it is accurate to say that Tatum and Stephens fit well together. [Go Pokes]

• Looks like Mike Gundy doesn’t want to miss out on another Jacobs brother, although it would be poetic if he were to snag the worse Jacobs to go along with the worse Hill (and the worse Sterns et al).

“Man, it’s amazing, especially since a lot wasn’t really given to my brother,” said Jacobs about his Oklahoma State offer. “The in-state colleges are starting to wake up on a lot of in-state (kids) and I really appreciate them noticing my ability and giving me the opportunity.”

I don’t think it’ll take too long before even more schools start to notice Jacob’s abilities. This past season as a junior, he was easily one of the best backs in the state of Oklahoma. In just eight games, he amassed 1,024 yards and nine touchdowns on 151 carries. That’s an average of 6.8 yards per carry and 128.0 yards per game. He also hauled in 27 receptions for 296 yards and one touchdown through the air. [Go Pokes]

• Patrick McKaufman, back. He mentioned how many 6’4 guys OSU has at receiver, and I briefly got very excited about football season.

“I’ve just got to keep getting used to planting and cutting off it, as far as playing smoothly and not thinking about it,” McKaufman said. “There’ll be times when I just go up and make a play, and it’ll be off my right leg and I never thought about it.

“But if I see a ball coming and I’m telegraphing it, I’ve got time to think about which leg I’m gonna jump off of. But once you get past the mental side, it’s full steam ahead.” [NewsOK]

• I think this might be the most Berry Tramel of all Berry Tramel posts. I loved it. He pulled a Bedlam story from a 1939 basketball game and wrote about it. Here’s an excerpt. Look at this writing!

“They even committed the cardinal Aggie sin by passing directly into the Sooners’ hands, they were that addles, as the Sooner fans roared with glee and the distraught Aggie lovers cried forevermore, let’s do something and do it now!

The UK’s sportswriting access crisis. This is excellent.
