Will Work for Wins

Boynton brought up what’s likely to be the most motivating thing for his first team.

“One of the kind of, I guess, things that gives me confidence is those guys tasted it last year,” Boynton said. “There’s nothing that can help motivate you more than getting close to accomplishing something and not having it happen. If you’re built the right way, and I believe we are, than this summer will be a summer of significant progress because of that.” [TulsaWorld]

The piece mentioned the team is older and all but Dawson have D1 experience (losing three starters). A fascinating mix of age, role player experience and a lot of guys on the cusp of being a terrific team last year.

Watch and Learn Weiberg

The most encouraging thing I could see AD-in-waiting Chad Weiberg do would look somewhat like what Arizona just did when suitors came calling for his athletic department’s breadwinner.

“The Ohio State University is a great university, but they are not going to get Coach (Sean) Miller,” Robbins said during a wide-ranging interview with The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com. “They will have to come over me to get him, as the saying goes, over my dead body.” [The Arizona Republic]

Is that too much to ask for? In light of recent events in the state, it’s reasonable to hope/expect more support for Gundy from the administration over time.

Program Building

Robert Allen tipped us off to an interesting recruiting tool Gundy and the gang has in motion.

‘Our coaches, Mike Yurcich with quarterbacks, Kasey Dunn with wide receivers, Tim Duffie and Dan Hammerschmidt with the secondary, corners and safeties came up with a different camp for the skill guys and they called it “The Show,”‘ Gundy explained.

“We brought those kids into our facilities and the came from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, even some from Florida and St. Louis. We had about 60 kids come in for a four hour camp from four, five, eight, how ever many hours away from Florida. Every one of those kids is capable of playing college football. That is how far we have come in this program.” [GoPokes $]

Most notable is how much Gundy pushed the satellite camps but this is another solid move – any chance you can get dudes on campus. Likely to have been instrumental in last commitment.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Where the head college football coaches of ten years ago are now (favorite is Nevada -> Italy)….Good for Creighton keeping their coach from Ohio State….A pair of Pokes landed the Big 12 scholar-athlete of the year award….Rickie honoring the Packers at the open but keeping his Cowboy orange for Sunday

British Cowgirl qualified for the 800 on Saturday.

This was a fun moment watching the annual “murder a good team at BPS” game.

TCU is (lonely) waving the Big 12 flag in the super regionals.
