Mike Holder Sounds Content About Chad Weiberg Eventually Taking Over
The worst-kept secret in Stillwater, Oklahoma is that Oklahoma State has hired its new, future athletic director. This was made official last month when Chad Weiberg was hired away from Texas Tech as Deputy AD. Barring something unforeseen, Weiberg will be the next AD in Stillwater. And current AD Mike Holder sounds like he’s fine with that.
Holder told the Tulsa World last week during the Big 12 spring meetings in Irving that he is “absolutely” comfortable with the notion that Weiberg was hired as his successor. “If and when that day comes, certainly (I feel good about entrusting the athletic department to him),” he added coyly to Guerin Emig of the World.
None of this is super surprising. Not the discreet nature of Holder’s words. Not the fact that Weiberg will run the department at some point in the future. None of it. As I’ve noted before, the only question is when all of this will take place.
I think Weiberg, whom Holder called “a people person” will be a nice breath of fresh air. You can argue all day about whether Holder has done a good job in Stillwater — he has — but the reality of any organization is that sometimes things become a bit stale, even with the best leaders.
Weiberg represents a new, much younger, era in Oklahoma State athletics, and I’m excited about it. This latest mini-conversation with Holder and the World last week in Irving only serves to prove that change is on the horizon. The end of the Holder era will be sad for some and a delight for others, but it’s about to take place. And OSU is going to continue thriving under new leadership into the future.
