Daily Bullets (May 28)
Our trusty Bullets man Steven Mandeville is taking a well-deserved day off. Hope everyone enjoys today’s second tier edition; no one does it quite like Steve-O.
Cowboy Golf in Striking Distance
Oklahoma State’s golf team started Sunday in second place and finished it in second, thanks to a record-setting 12-under 276 from Duke. But the Cowboys are in striking distance just three strokes off the lead.
I refuse to read any other golf coverage if KP is writing it, and thankfully for us, we’ve got him in Stillwater the next few days.
The Blue Devils shot a preposterous 12-under 276, which is the round of the week by three strokes and doubles as the course record.
There is a zero percent chance they repeat that on Monday during the final round of the stroke play portion of the event, and OSU should have a good shot to grab the No. 1 seed on their home course after rounds of 287, 285 and 285. [PFB]
It would be a pretty massive upset for OSU to flop on its home course. Still plenty of scores to be snatched and holes to be played, but Monday is a big one.
Gundy steps ups
Mike Gundy offered lifetime sideline passes to Jason Seaman, a teacher in Indiana who disarmed a school shooter. I thought Guerin Emig of the Tulsa World did a good job putting the gesture into a bigger picture.
A student opened fire inside an Indiana middle school Friday. There was a time this country stopped in its tracks when something like this occurred. We wept and got sick to our stomach and wondered who and what we were becoming. Now numbness has set in to the point I’m not sure how many of us even noticed this happening.
Mike Gundy noticed.
The Oklahoma State coach noticed that seventh grade science teacher and football coach Jason Seaman disarmed the shooter, and tweeted Seaman had OSU sideline passes “for the rest of his life.”
Emig always has something thought-provoking worth giving a skim in his “Guerin-teed it was quite a week” column. And man, what a column name!

Other stuff I’m reading
This exit interview on the Boston Celtics from The Ringer was a great postmortem file in the wake of Marcus Smart’s squad falling to the GOAT on Sunday. It addressed a major offseason question that will soon be answered: Will Boston keep Smart?
Smart is the longest-tenured Celtic on the roster, and he’s only 24 years old. He’s one of the most capable defenders in the league, a skill that’s served as a through line as Boston morphed backcourts. Smart will become a restricted free agent this summer, and his case is interesting by default. Boston is all but capped out, but can match any offer sheet that comes. Many franchises around the league are still gun-shy on spending after a flood of rich contracts in 2016. For as valuable as Smart’s defense is, the market for a horrific shooter is [ghost of Tony Allen descends] at an all-time low. He fits best in a system like Stevens’s and is beloved by the city. Though ask Isaiah Thomas—that matters none to Ainge. [The Ringer]
Also this from The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor on Klay Thompson was smart.
One more also: Go Rockets, baby.
