Daily Bullets (Nov 17) – Is OSU a Trap Game for WVU, Boynton’s Top-15 Class

Happy Senior Day in Stillwater.

Oklahoma-Two Step

One of the best things about the Pokes playing the Mountaineers today is who they line up against next Saturday – OU. This seems like a typical trap game for West Virginia.

This is a tricky finishing stretch for West Virginia, to end the season with back to backs against the Oklahoma schools that are generally amongst the league’s best. OSU hasn’t been great this year but they can score points and they’ve flashed on defense from time to time.

I think West Virginia will struggle with the OSU balance as well as Tylan Wallace’s ability to execute double moves against off coverage. Taylor Cornelius vs Kenny Robinson will be an interesting matchup in this game that could determine the outcome.

On the other side of the ball, OSU is at their best when Malcolm Rodriguez and/or Kenneth Edison-McGruder can get involved in stopping the run. They need to do work outside at CB so they can play more single-high or sky coverage to get those guys clamping down on the middle of the field. [ConcerningSports]

I threw in those matchup questions as a bonus – Wallace will Wallace the Mountaineers, Corndog will have his hands full with a tall athletic safety. Ian Boyd (the author, a national CFB writer, and Texas blogger) went on to pick the Pokes that despite a handful of losses is playing with confidence after the bye.

Heralded Class

Mike Boynton’s incoming (and top-15) class is turning heads.

“Oklahoma State is bringing in an impressive recruiting class,” said Director of Basketball Scouting for 247Sports Jerry Meyer. “They all strike me as recruits who could very likely out play their rankings. There is a variety of playmaking, physical strength, length, scoring, etc. I would look for them to make a significant impact sooner than later for Oklahoma State.” [247 Sports]

Conventional wisdom in coaching is giving a guy three years to really get his system installed and his players in place. By the end of Mike Boynton’s third season, he’ll have a top-15 class budding with a handful of 2018 class recruits with a year or two under his belt.

Boynton has been a great hire for numerous reasons but what sticks out is how he was the perfect fit for a bridge from Underwood’s teams (with high familiarity) but he also seems like a guy capable of bringing in some stacked classes and helping them win too.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Joe Wickline is at home in West Virginia and Stillwater….Wickline and Dana Holgorsen make a good pair….Boynton explains why he played Michael Weathers this week….Tramel picks the Pokes plus others in this week’s predictions….Trying to run on the new defensive tite front….Zion Williamson would be an insane tight end

Gunnar Gundy’s Pioneers took out Dax Hill’s Hornets for a trip to the title.

Tylan for the Earl Campbell would be sweet.

Here’s a Bedlam battle to watch on repeat.
