Daily Bullets (Nov. 5): More Conservative Playcalling Coming, Barry Sanders = The GOAT

Published

on

Two bits of news – five-star guard Bryce Thompson set his commitment date and an 11 a.m. kick for the KU game

Bullets Rundown

• Conservative playcalling – coming soon
• Lower turnovers and other impressive numbers
• Barry Sanders crowned the GOAT

OSU Bullets

• The playcalling is currently and will continue to be more conservative than a presidential election in Oklahoma.

In 2009, because of injuries and (Dez) Bryant’s absence, (Mike) Gundy was forced to go with a conservative offense.

Now, because (Tylan) Wallace is on crutches, because (Chuba) Hubbard is a run-game phenom, because the defense has real momentum and because Gundy doesn’t want to see (Spencer) Sanders throw a bunch of interceptions, the 2019 Cowboys offense is fixin’ to become the most conservative Cowboys offense in 10 years. [TulsaWorld]

I don’t love watching my quarterback run it like we’re having to see Sanders every week. It’s just more hits than a quarterback would ideally take. With that being said, it’s not worth preserving an ineffective quarterback and letting him run is probably the most important aspect of him being effective.

Also – this is exactly what Mike Gundy wants, right? How much does any non-Mike Leach disciple at head coach enjoy saying – “yes, dial-up run plays 70 percent of the time.”

• The number that sticks out the most in OSU’s two-wins has easily been the turnover number. But other numbers around that pop off the page too.

Take the last four. Against Texas Tech and Baylor, OSU was minus 7. Against Iowa State and TCU, it was plus 5.

Credit Spencer Sanders for figuring out how to hold onto the ball and decreasing his INTs (?) , and the defense for its sudden ability to ball-hawk. If the Cowboys can keep it up, they’ll give themselves a chance at a fun finish. [PFB]

Other numbers around the wins: OSU is running less than 60 plays a game and giving Spencer Sanders free rein to run darn near 20 times a game. Sanders is materially more in his element throwing screens and bombs or taking off than he is making reads and throwing intermediate passes.

USA Today named Barry Sanders their top college football player of all time (shocker). The list of players he surpassed was pretty impressive too.

Former Oklahoma State running back Sanders received 85% of the vote to knock off Pittsburgh great Tony Dorsett in the head-to-head championship meeting.

Sanders never had less than 72% of the vote in any of his weekly matchups. He took down Mike Singletary, Dave Rimington, Keith Jackson, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker and Charles Woodson to reach the final. [USA Today]

OSU made two of ESPN’s 150 greatest games – neither will you want to recall (No. 97 and No. 104)

Blake Jarwin had this pretty catch and run into the end zone last night:

• I’ll take another Bryce Thompson visit. And another Cade Cunnigham visit for that matter.

Non-OSU Bullets

• I love conversation starters and these questions on how to get past “so, what do you do?” were good
• This map of the supply chain of American food is pretty cool
• These two reads on money were good – one on millionaire habits and the other on faith-based angles on how to talk with your kiddos about money
