Daily Bullets (Oct 25) – Multiple Running Back Sets, Where OSU Basketball Ranks in CBB
Sticking With What Works
With five games to go, let’s take a look at what OSU has found some success with.
The Pokes got away from their offensive strength in game four against Texas Tech and were pummeled. They ran Hill hard at Kansas, got into a track meet against Iowa State, then couldn’t do much of anything at K-State… except the few times they made use of all three of their running backs.
I might use Hill and Hubbard together more often against Texas Saturday night.
When a reporter asked Mike Gundy about the combination Monday, and the possibility he could use it instead of a combination of Hill and a Cowboy back, Gundy replied: “We have that, but they’re not blockers like those guys (Cowboys backs Britton Abbott and Jelani Woods) are.” [TulsaWorld]
That makes sense – you become more predictable if there’s only one thing you can do from a set. But if the CowboyBacks aren’t having any luck clearing the way, at least you’ve got other another solid option.
Top 100… Team Ranking?
Cowboy Basketball continues to find low expectations regardless of overachieving last year.
98. Oklahoma State
Cam McGriff will be the star on this team. And if second-year coach Mike Boynton Jr. didn’t need enough humor or motivation, consider this: Oklahoma State was picked to finish last in the Big 12 a year ago. The Cowboys went on to a 19-14 record, swept Kansas in the regular season and won at West Virginia. OSU has again been picked last in the Big 12 (including by yours truly). Another mea culpa coming in four months? [CBS Sports]
One year doesn’t make a trend – I agree – but at some point Mike Boynton’s teams will start getting the benefit of the doubt.

Boynton’s a character. Not sure there was a guy out there who was a better fit to coach this team (especially for the money OSU paid).
