OSU > OU

Berry Tramel ranks OSU ahead of OU in the Big 12 race.

Maybe the difference between OSU and OU right now is that in conference, the Sooners have looked shaky two straight games. [NewsOK]

OU barely escaped Waco with a win (which was swept under the rug because OSU laid an egg against TCU the same day), but it’s worth monitoring that the Sooners haven’t looked the same since they returned from Columbus with a win.

Red River Rivalry on Saturday looms large. (P.S.: Texas is unbeaten in B12 play ?.)

Stillwater High Special

Cool feature story here by Scott Wright on the sons of OSU coaches carrying their bond at Stillwater High, including starting sophomore QB Gunnar Gundy.

“I don’t think I could overstate the value of our relationship with coach Gundy and his program,” Stillwater coach Tucker Barnard said. “From the day I took the job, coach Gundy and that staff have been incredible to us.” [NewsOK]

Among those competing at Stillwater High: Gunnar Gundy (son of Mike), Luke McEndoo (son of Cowboy Backs coach Jason), and Will Henson (son of OL coach Josh.)

Shouts to Gundy for creating a cool atmosphere with the local high school. Let’s hope it pays off when they start churning out Division I level talent now and into the future. [Looking at you, Qwontrel Walker].

Coaching: B

Mark Cooper hands out midseason grades for Oklahoma State, including a borderline fail for the special teams units through 5 games.

Most years, the Cowboys get an A, or close to it. That couldn’t be further from the case in 2017. Oklahoma State has fumbled away two special-teams touchdowns — a muffed punt by Jalen McCleskey and a snap over the head of Zach Sinor — and has not scored any. It allowed an onside kick to Texas Tech and has missed four field goals. The only positive came last weekend, when redshirt freshman Devin Harper blocked a punt. As Oklahoma State kicker Matt Ammendola tries to regroup and as OSU tries to create any momentum in its return game, Harper’s big play saves the unit from an F. [Tulsa World]

This goes back to lack of discipline in some ways, but it’s an alarming realization for OSU that it hasn’t been up to snuff — like, at all — on special teams.
