Daily Bullets (Sept 27) – Effects of the Redshirt Rule Change, Solving the Quarterback Problem

Unintended Consequences

The new redshirt rule has opened up a new avenue – players sampling a football season then heading another direction midstream. And while OSU and Jalen McCleskey have been a great fit, the two most logical reasons for transfer don’t necessarily hold water.

Is he frustrated over the ball distribution? That’s difficult to defend, considering McCleskey has 167 career catches. Only five Cowboys ever have had more.Does McCleskey want to transfer to Tulane, where his father, J.J. McCleskey, was added to the staff last off-season? If so, maybe Jalen McCleskey figured out the new redshirt rule and understood that he could play four games for OSU, then step aside, still graduate and transfer to Tulane.

Does McCleskey seek a higher profile to put himself in position for the NFL Draft? That seems dubious. NFL scouts quite well know how to find Stillwater. They drafted three OSU pitchers or catchers last spring. [NewsOK]

While the discussion is naturally about McCleskey – best wishes to what everything seems to say is a high character kid who’s been incredibly successful in Stillwater – it’s bigger than him. While football purists may disagree, in the world of universities benefitting monetarily from student-athletes, any benefit given seems like a bargain.

Steadying the Ship

While the wave of turmoil and unrest at the quarterback spot persists, McCleskey won’t be a part of any potential solution for the passing game.

Now Gundy needs (Taylor) Cornelius to bounce back and someone besides Tylan Wallace to catch passes and an offensive line to man up so the OSU passing attack can get out of second gear. McCleskey sure could have helped.

Gundy needs his fans to trust everything will be OK on the field, and that everything is OK away from it. That morale and confidence remain high with a back-loaded Big 12 Conference schedule looming. [TulsaWorld]

With Kansas and Iowa State on the horizon, there’s time and reps for other stars to emerge. But guys like McCleskey and Tyron Johnson that are capable of solid yards after the catch make for a great pressure release valve. The Landon Wolf story could truly take off now.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Interesting update on any hypothetical Dru Brown transfer….Fun story here on former-Cowboy walkon Mason Cox told by Keiton Page….Britton Abbott named one of five Big 12 Campbell Award trophy semi-finalists….A couple of weeks old but the Big 12’s struggles in Jerry World are unreal….CFB coaches tell wild stories about headset conversations

I’m excited about the Spencer Sanders show next year (at the latest) but man this would be fun.

This is a pretty cool picture – when the library was new!

Side note – why has Braum’s not picked up an OSU/OU flavor line of ice creams?
