Daily Bullets (Sept 28) – Finding Answers for OSU’s Offense, Multiple Angles to the QB Situation

Personal note: Happy anniversary to Mrs. Bullets. She never says a (cross) word, loves Stillwater, loves our family. I wouldn’t trade her for Dax Hill, Gerald Green or Laquon Treadwell in orange.

We’ve Got Questions, What are the Answers?

TulsaWorld’s Guerin Emig considers what answers the Cowboy offense could have for the problems that ail them.

“Sure would like to have (Justice Hill) touch it a few more times,” Gundy said Monday, or five days before the suggestion becomes an order at Kansas.

But what else? Could Gundy feature the sneaky-mobile (Taylor) Cornelius more in the run game moving forward? That ploy worked against Boise State two weeks ago. It worked for a 14-yard run in the first quarter against Tech.

“We want to run him some, but we don’t want to make a living doing it,” Gundy said. “I just worry about those guys getting hit. … If I knew he wasn’t going to get hurt, I’d be all for it.”

What about Cornelius in the passing game? OSU’s offensive line isn’t protecting him any better than the 2014 line, the flimsiest of the Gundy era, protected Daxx Garman, J.W. Walsh and Mason Rudolph.

Cornelius can move. The pocket can move. Maybe try rolling Cornelius to buy some time and space?

“It’s not really what we do,” Gundy said. “There’s a little more to that than just looks. One thing you have to be careful of is you try to put new schemes in. I’ve done that before in my career and then come in at halftime in a game and said, ‘This stinks. We’re going back to what we do.’ Really doesn’t work that way.” [TulsaWorld]

So what we know from last week is that dropping back TC to pick apart a defense and running Justice Hill 12 times doesn’t equal more than 20 points.

That leads me to believe that rolling out and running the QB and leaning on Hill are some of your more viable solutions and there has to be some gamesmanship in Gundy’s remarks.

Finding the Truth

When you think about the quarterback situation in Stillwater, there are multiple facets to consider.

In regard to a possible demotion of Cornelius and promotion of Hawaii transfer Dru Brown, keep this in mind: Gundy and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich see Brown every day on the practice field.

The guess here is if Gundy believed Brown was ready to play and thrive, he would have been on the field when OSU trailed 31-17 last week.

On the subject of freshman Spencer Sanders, Gundy’s response is consistent: “He’s not ready.”

During most of the 2014 season, until injuries forced Gundy to make a big decision, the coach said the same thing about then-freshman Mason Rudolph.

Even after Cornelius was 18-of-38 against the Red Raiders, Gundy still may consider the tall senior to be OSU’s best option at QB. [TulsaWorld]

While his track record of interpreting who the right guy is may not be great, he’s done a good job grooming the guy once he’s in. And while the impending Big 12 North three-game stint against Kansas, Iowa State, and Kansas State lurks as a terrific training ground for a new quarterback, Gundy may see it as a brilliant opportunity to build some confidence for a new-old quarterback.

Crazy that VT’s capacity to block field goals transitioned well.

It’s hard to tell if TCU’s bad or Texas is good.

Pretty tone-deaf stuff here from tOSU in today’s world.
