Explaining the Brief Appearance an OSU Coach Apparently Made on Last Chance U Season 3

Last Chance U, a Netflix original series that featured Independence Community College in its most recent season, is one of the more polarizing shows available to the public right now.

Given Maryland’s plight amid reports its coaching staff pushed players too hard and created a toxic culture of disrespect towards players, it was difficult to watch Indy’s coach, Jason Brown, throw episodic fits by the minute aimed at players, coaches, administration — you name it.

The players weren’t much better.

So you can imagine my surprise when I was watching season 3 this week and saw Brown pick up a call from an Oklahoma State coach asking about one of the hottest heads on the roster in quarterback Malik Henry. So who is he, and what was OSU’s connection?

The situation

There’s (likely) more to the story than the minute-long interaction aired on the Netflix show, but what we know is this: Brown fielded a call from an “Oklahoma State coach” — whose name was not revealed — inquiring about QB Malik Henry.

Brown shot the OSU coach straight and explained that Henry, who transferred from FSU after only one season, has issues with class, doesn’t like school, but he’s a great QB.

“He’s 19, about to be 20, I’d bet my beach house he could get in on a Sunday (NFL) and not f*** it up,” Brown said. “He’s a competitive SOB.”

Brown explained to his assistant, who was in the room at the time the OSU coach called, that the Cowboy coach also inquired about his character — which was (and still is) a major question mark.

The prospect: QB Malik Henry

Henry is a Florida State “bounceback” who joined Indy after transferring from FSU after only one season. During his time at FSU, he was suspended for a violation of team rules, and didn’t dress for games as a player in his short tenure.

He joined FSU to high acclaim, however. Henry was a five-star prospect coming out of high school and considered to be the potential heir apparent to Jameis Winston.

The outcome

Henry, despite his obvious talents, remains available. In 2017, he threw for 1383 yards and 10 touchdowns with a 54-percent completion rate at Independence, but as Indy coach Jason Brown noted on the show, teams are skittish to push forward an offer his way because of his checkered history and attitude that may have contributed to his short stint at FSU.

Per 247Sports, Henry is listed as a 2018 prospect. So theoretically he could have been headed into a Division I program had he been given a shot. It’s possible that he returns for another season next year with Indy in hopes of generating more college interest before bouncing back to the Power 5 level, but right now it doesn’t appear OSU is interested.
