Final Notes and Thoughts on Oklahoma State’s 38-35 Win Over Texas

Emptying the notebook on a wild weekend in Stillwater.

Have you breathed yet? I unloaded in my 10 Thoughts in the wee hours of Sunday morning, but it’s time to clear the notebook before moving on to next week. We have a LOT to discuss.

• This is dumb and possibly inconsequential, but I love the fireworks that get shot off the top of BPS for big night games like this one and Bedlam last year. Makes it feel like the big time event that it is.

• This was great.

• I formation! Carson and I sat by each other in the press box during the game and yelped aloud when OSU went to it on fourth down early in the game. Like 2018 was paying an homage to both 1988 and 1978!

• Bizarre play call of the night: The QB sneak on third and 2 right before the I-formation touchdown toss to Jelani. Corn is tall. He ain’t that tall.

• Keondre Wudtee wearing Hart Lee’s number 11 made me laugh for some reason. I did not see this towel, however.

• I will get tired of Chuba getting around the end about never. I asked him about it after the game, and he said his offensive line was hooking Texas nicely — ? — and giving him space.

• Another Chuba note from the postgame. He kept saying that he knew OSU was going to beat Texas. He was adamant about this. Or as adamant as a Canadian gets about anything.

• I wanted to see throwback polos on the coaches, and we got them.

• Texas did not recruit Tylan Wallace. That is glorious.

• Some numbers: OSU had 260 yards in the first quarter. Tylan + Chuba had 303 combined for the game. Texas gives up 360 a game on average. Amazing. In the last decade, Texas has given up 500 yards 20 times. Four to OSU, the 20th on Saturday night.

• Zero doubts!

• OSU went all out with the throwback stuff. They had the logo on their video boards, jumbotrons, all over the place. Mike Holder may have gotten a tattoo of it. The whole reveal could not have been done any better.

• So I think Simba Cam may be the greatest off-the-field thing to happen to OSU football games. It’s almost impossible for it to be not funny. Carson and I were rolling in the press box at every subsequent chubby 1-year-old dangling by their parents’ arms in the heart of the crowd on Saturday evening. Awesome. Would subscribe to a weekly show.

• Sup?

• It really felt for a while like missed field goals early and missed opportunities at TDs were going to come back to bite OSU late. They nearly did. Ammendola was not great but everybody else was so kinda the opposite of most of the games so far this year.

• Apropos of nothing: Justice looks like he’s running at a different speed than everybody else on the field. I want him to come back for his senior year more than I wanted James Washington to come back for his.

• At one point Ehlinger was rolling out to his right and hit Gundy in the hands on the OSU sideline. Gundy didn’t even try to catch it. He just stick his arms straight in the air, and it nearly stuck. I don’t know why, but it made me laugh.

• Corndog rocked the long 1988-style sleeves, and it was great. I noticed Spencer Sanders rocking them too. Didn’t get a look at Dru Brown.

• Tylan had 17 targets. The rest of OSU’s team had 16 combined. That’s insane and possibly unsustainable.

• I think the rule now is that these throwbacks have to be worn for every home game until they lose, right?

• Gundy running a fake formation on a punt was delicious. I’m very dubious over whether this is legal (and if it is, it shouldn’t be!) but as we all know, Gundy knows the rule book better than any other coach in college football.

• Who — as Gundy would say — “frustrates you” more between Herman and Ehlinger? I think it’s Herman for me because, as Kyle Boone pointed out, Ehlinger’s swagger is kinda what you want in your QB. Herman is just a lunatic that nobody seems to really like all that much.

• Lol!

• When you’re playing poorly, it feels like every call is a dagger. A.J. Green pretty clearly interfered with 8 minutes left in the third, but there wasn’t a call and it felt like the beginning of the end for Texas.

• HireOSUGrads.com uses the phrase “Pistols Hiring” in their marketing. ?

• We should talk about Zach Sinor flipping the field with that 57-yard punt with 10 minutes left and OSU looking like it was going to fade coming around the final turn. Big time play from somebody who has been in the spotlight for some, uh, not big time plays over the past year and a half.

• I agree with this.

• Unpopular opinion: I loved the toss sweep from the goal line! Gundy was more proud of it in the postgame (I think he implemented it?) than my kids are when they beat me in board games!

• How about this take on the non-safety: It actually worked out better for OSU. They got the ball on the Texas 35 and had to be aggressive with a 3-point lead instead of conservative with a 5-point lead. It led to the dagger. Maybe the most egregious call of the night kinda worked in OSU’s favor.

• Mmmm wrestler shade is the best shade.

• The spots all night were atrocious. Several of you mentioned this on Twitter. It was obvious from the press box as well. They were off by two yards at some points of the game!

• Here are the top 10 games of the Gundy era for receivers in terms of yards per catch with a minimum of eight catches. Tylan is now on the list.

• Multiple players were rocking the Barry Sanders throwback jerseys along with the shoes in the postgame interviews. Awesome look. Wear them forever.

• The perfect ending.
