Football Rankings: Analyzing Oklahoma State’s Votes in the Final AP Poll

The Associated Press released its final college football poll of the season on Tuesday, and Oklahoma State found itself ranked at No. 14.

While it is four spots lower than where the Cowboys were to begin the season, the win over Virginia Tech did OSU a lot of good in the eyes of voters.

First, let’s take a look at the season as a whole:

WEEK TOP-10 11-25 HIGHEST% HIGHEST LOWEST
PRE-SEASON 24 37 NO. 10, 11, 12 (10 VOTES) NO. 2 NO. 23
WEEK 2 36 25 NO. 9 (14 VOTES) NO. 3 NO. 15
WEEK 3 40 21 NO. 8 (13 VOTES) NO. 6 NO. 15
WEEK 4 55 6 NO. 5 (13 VOTES) NO. 4 NO. 12
WEEK 5 0 61 NO. 14 (14 VOTES) NO. 12 NO. 21
WEEK 6 0 61 NO. 15 (14 VOTES) NO. 11 NO. 20
WEEK 7 2 59 NO. 13 (11 VOTES) NO. 9 NO. 20
WEEK 8 26 35 NO. 10 (12 VOTES) NO. 7 NO. 18
WEEK 9 17 44 NO. 11 (19 VOTES) NO. 8 NO. 16
WEEK 10 21 41 NO. 11 (21 VOTES) NO. 6 NO. 14
WEEK 11 9 52 NO. 14 (14 VOTES) NO. 9 NO. 21
WEEK 12 20 41 NO. 11 (14 VOTES) NO. 6 NO. 21
WEEK 13 0 60 NO. 18 (13 VOTES) NO. 14 NR
WEEK 14 1 60 NO. 18 (12 VOTES) NO. 10 NO. 23
WEEK 15 0 52 NO. 18 (13 VOTES) NO. 12 NO. 23
FINAL 7 54 NO. 16 (12 VOTES) NO. 9 NO. 18

OSU didn’t have a single vote in the Top-10 heading into the bowl game. Not even a vote for No. 11. However, the Pokes’ 30-21 win over the Hokies convinced seven voters that the Cowboys were, by the end of the year, a top-10 team.

Not only that, it convinced just about every voter to move them up. The biggest jump coming from Sammy Batten, who was OSU’s lowest vote for the last few weeks, ended up moving them all the way from 23rd to 12th in the final week.

On the down side, a good chunk of voters had OSU outside the top 15 and behind teams like Northwestern (really?!) and Washington.

To be honest, I think that final ranking is right where OSU belongs. More importantly, the votes seem to be a perfect example of the season. OSU at their best (Pitt, OU, Baylor) looked like a top 10 team. At its worst (Kansas State, Texas, TCU), it deserved a No. 16 or lower ranking. That OSU finished 14th seems right.

And while that is a disappointing finish, I’ll take it.
